Description
This course provides the opportunity for the apprentice to develop the knowledge, skills, process, and understanding of hardness testing and heat treating of various materials.

Course Competencies
  1. Test hardness of materials
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill Demonstration
    Criteria
    apprentice conducts a hardness test on given materials selected by the instructor
    apprentice uses a Rockwell and/or Brinell hardness tester
    apprentice determines hardness within a pre-established range
    apprentice relates hardness to machinability to 100% accuracy
    apprentice converts results of one type of harness testing to another within the accuracy provided on the conversion chart
    apprentice selects the correct [TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, INSTRUMENTS, MATERIALS, SUPPLIES]
    apprentice performs all critical steps in the right order
    apprentice verbalizes an explanation of the process as it is performed
    apprentice submits test results to the instructor for review and feedback

  2. Select applications for various materials

    Criteria
    explain AISI as it relates to varioius steel types
    list the common alloys in various steel types
    describe the effects of alloys in various steel types
    explain the particular steel making process
    identify steel types and uses by AISI number
    predict the effect of various alloying effects on various types of steel

  3. Determine an application for a heat treating process
    Assessment Strategies
    Oral, Written or Graphic Assessment
    Criteria
    select an appropriate heat treat process for specific materials and applications
    heat treat method selected accounts for the type of material being used
    heat treat method accounts for the correct sequence in the manufacturing process
    heat treat method accounts for requirements shown on the print (as applicable)
    use correct heat treating terms

  4. Examine various alloying elements
    Assessment Strategies

    apprentice uses terms accurately
    apprentice applies concepts correctly
    apprentice references resources
    apprentice completes worksheet on time
