Description
Cell phones, smart phones, PDAs, and related storage devices are a growing source of digital evidence in the forensics profession and present unique challenges for forensic examiners. This course will also introduce fundamental concepts in mobile communications, including an overview of cell phone technology and networks, sources of potential evidence, evidence handling considerations, and small device forensic processes and documentation techniques. Students will have the opportunity work hands-on with small device forensic tools and technology.

  1. Discuss the history, current role, and future direction of mobile phones and small devices and their potential evidentiary value

  2. Explain the role of mobile and small device forensics and ethical standards in criminal and civil investigations

  3. Identify and explain various mobile phone network types

  4. Explain concepts of what data is stored on mobile devices, associated removable data storage devices, online storage repositories, and mobile service providers

  5. Explain and identify other small devices of potential digital evidentiary value

  6. Explain the importance of process in small device forensic examinations

  7. Perform basic forensic analyses of acquired evidence using EnCase and other mobile device forensic examination tools

  8. Produce reports reflecting work done during small device forensic analysis for presentation to investigator, attorney, and in court

  9. Explain the procedure of archiving data extracted and documented from mobile phones and small devices
