    Criteria
    Implement disinfection standards (SPS 50.271)
    Implement sanitation standards (SPS 50.271)
    Implement procedures for exposure to blood (SPS 50.290)
    Hands are washed thoroughly with soap and running water prior to serving each client and following removal of gloves (waterless hand washing agents that kill 99.99% of germs are an acceptable substitute)

  2. Prepare client for shampoo and scalp treatments

    Criteria
    Evaluate client's scalp and hair to determine if services are feasible
    Supplies are chosen and positioned for most efficient use during the shampoo and scalp service
    Client is draped to protect clothing and skin from water and products
    A neck strip or towel are placed around the neck of the client to prevent contact with the cape (SPS 50.270)
    Client is comfortable, strain is prevented for both the barber and the client

  3. Perform scalp treatment

    Criteria
    Clean towels are used for each client (SPS 50.270)
    Avoid prohibited, infectious, and contagious diseases treatments (SPS 50.200)
    Determine the most effective type of scalp treatment for the desired end result
    Apply products following manufacturer's instructions
    Application avoids contact with the client's eyes or ears
    Products are dispensed from a container designed to prevent contamination of unused portion
    Hair is detangled
    Water is lukewarm and applied to the client's scalp and hair
    Use the pads of your fingers (not nails) to massage the product into the scalp with gentle, circular motions
    Scalp and hair are rinsed
    Hair is towel-dried

  4. Demonstrate effective shampooing

    Clean towels are used for each client
    Select most effective shampoo and conditioner based on hair analysis
    Products are dispensed from a container designed to prevent contamination of unused portion
    Shampoo bowls and basins are drained after each use and kept in a sanitary and safe condition
    Hair is detangled
    Water is lukewarm and applied to client's scalp and hair
    Use the pads of your fingers (not nails) to massage the shampoo into the scalp with gentle, circular motions
    Scalp and hair are rinsed
    Hair is towel-dried
