Perform anesthesia and monitoring of patients throughout dental procedures

Identify teeth, give the name and function of each, recognize species differences

Recognize the canine and feline dental formulas and root formulas

Demonstrate knowledge of the anatomy of a tooth including the materials a tooth is made of, parts of a tooth, and nomenclature for tooth surfaces

Identify the instruments associated with COHAT

Discuss common dental problems and pathology including gingivitis periodontal disease, malocclusion, mandibular symphyseal fractures, crown fractures and caries

Discuss the importance of dental care in an animal s health program. Be able to tell a client why COHAT is an important part of a pet s health care and how one is performed

Take and process dental radiographs

Discuss safety precautions taken when performing COHAT and dental radiographs

Recognize signs of impending cardiopulmonary arrest.

Perform CPR

Discuss common pharmacologic agents used during CPR and emergencies

Calculate and administer Emergency drugs

Perform artificial ventilation

Compare and contrast the different types of shock hypovolemic anaphylactic and their causes and treatment

Calculate fluid therapy rates and total volume amounts in terms of a given total dose, given dose rate, and %volume loss.

Obtain parameters needed to evaluate a critical patient   including but not limited to a TPR, CRT, MM color, dehydration status, pulse rate and quality, lungs sounds, resp quality, heart sounds

Care for the recumbent patient

Recognize and respond to common veterinary emergencies trauma, resp distress, acute abdomen, GDV, Urethral obstruction, toxic ingestion, dystocia, c sections

Successful evaluations

Perform a complete preoperative physical examination and keep appropriate records.

Calculate and administer pre-operative mendicants and know their use, routes of administration and contraindications, as well as adverse reactions.

Discuss and perform patient preparation for surgical procedures

Discuss and perform patient preparation for common surgical procedures

Perform client education and discharge instructions for common surgical procedures (written client education as well as telephone )

Calculate and administer anesthetics agents, know their use, route of administration, contraindications and adverse reactions

Perform endotracheal intubation

Familiar with common monitoring devices, their application, and interpretation of results and mechanism of action

Discuss safety precautions involved with the use of anesthetics

Check anesthetic equipment prior to use and after use for correct set up, function, and maintenance

Appropriately prepare the surgical suite and instruments needed for surgery

Discuss the unique qualities and risks of each species presented in class in terms of handling, sample collection, and anesthesia (rabbits, rodents, birds, reptiles)

Perform anesthesia and monitoring of rabbits, rodents, birds and reptiles

Use an appropriate anesthetic regime on each species

Discuss the different anesthetics used for induction of anesthesia, including risks and benefits

Discuss the safety concerns and precautions that should be employed with each of the different anesthetics

Can perform alternate inductions and evaluate their use according to checklist and scoring guides provided in the course
