Course Information
Description
The course provides hands-on, practical experience in one or more phases of the production process. Students will choose the artistic area of interest and then carry out practical exercises in stage management, directing or performing. Students will engage in real time learning including facing deadlines, budget constraints and the collaboration that is necessary in a theatre production. 54 hour time requirement.

  1. Explore areas of theatre technology

    Criteria
    Theatrical production is at Madison College or a community or professional theatre (minimum 54 hours)
    Include examples to support your self-assessment rating, such as photos
    Self-assessment includes references to show support
    Include documented hours
    Include a clear purpose statement
    Include an analysis of the target audience
    Describe your adherence to contractually agreed upon criteria
    Show evidence of logical critical thinking
    Follow an effective organizational plan
    Develop a plan for developing two or three areas of continued development
    Exhibit correct and appropriate grammar, punctuation, spelling, syntax, and word usage

  2. Work on a theatrical production in areas of performance, design, production or stage management

    Criteria
    Include a letter of acknowledgment confirming the work was done from a production lead such as a producer, director, stage manager, or choreographer
    Record the hours spent on production (54 hours)
    Describe specific work/tasks and techniques performed on a production
    Describe your role
    Explain how this learning opportunity will shape future choices

  3. Participate in the rehearsal process as required by production role
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill Demonstration, Written Product, Portfolio
    Criteria
    Describe the production’s development through rehearsal process
    (For performers) include character analysis and development including objective, obstacle and superobjective
    (For performers) include character analysis and development including character backstory essay
    (For performers) include key discoveries made about character and story during rehearsal process
    Include reflections on overall developments in final tech/dress week
    Include brief script analysis that identifies main characters, key or iconic scenes (inciting incidents, climax, etc.)
    Record hours spent in rehearsals, noting key moments in the process (off-book, designer runs, invited dress, etc.)
    (For stage management, production, direction) include samples of prompt books and director/producer notes taken or relayed to cast

  4. Participate in production meetings as required by production role
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill Demonstration, Written Product, Portfolio
    Criteria
    (For performers only) participate in a minimum of one production meeting or design presentation
    Describe the production’s vision and initial design renderings
    Explain the problems solved, creative solutions, and discussions in meetings
    Include sample of your notes taken during one production meeting

  5. Analyze at least one performance of a show that you were part of

    Criteria
    Analysis relates to your specific performance or production role
    (For performers only) include description of performance experience overall
    Describe your contributions to the final product
    Describe what you learned (your strengths, opportunities to improve) from rehearsal to production
    Outline how renderings and early rehearsals translated to a final performance
    Identify one experience that you will apply to future production work
