Course Information
Description
An Introduction to the common elements of the photography and videography process. The basic principles of effective composition, lighting, exposure and control of motion and focus are covered. Basics of portraiture and product photography is studied in a studio environment. Specific requirements to video content creation are addressed. Participants provide their own video-enabled DSLR camera. Please contact your program director prior to any camera purchase.

  1. Shoot photographs using the DSLR

    Criteria
    Use basic functions of the DSLR
    Demonstrate basic camera settings for photographing: landscape, close up and stop/blur motion photographs
    Demonstrate effects of F-Stop on depth of field
    Demonstrate the effects of shutter speed on photographs

  2. Apply lighting, metering, and exposure techniques to photographs

    Criteria
    Describe the role of metering and exposure in photography
    Demonstrate manual exposure control and meter reading by showing three photographs of bracketing exposures, (0, -1 and +1)
    Use Photoshop to illustrate metering and exposure
    Implement histogram and exposure in photoshop
    Photoshop document is submitted with adjustment layers

  3. Use the digital workflow process: capture, digital access management, image manipulation, digital output

    Criteria
    Demonstrate ratings of image files in Adobe Bridge or Lightroom Library module
    Apply editing in Photoshop Camera Raw or Lightroom develop module
    Demonstrate photoshop layer masking techniques
    Create a digital output - print

  4. Create photographs portraying differences in light, time, motion, depth of field/focus and color/grayscale
    Assessment Strategies
    Shooting assignments/photograph (8 images), Quiz, Written Product, Critique
    Criteria
    Produce three images showing front, back and side lightings
    Produce four images showing stop motion, blur motion, minimal depth of field and large depth of field
    Produce one RGB color image and one grayscale image

  5. Demonstrate basic video editing techniques

    Criteria
    Use Adobe Premiere Software
    Video includes timeline, transition effects and titles, two video tracks (A roll and B rolls) and Audio track

  6. Demonstrate basic video shooting and storytelling skills
    Assessment Strategies
    Shooting assignments/video, Quiz, Written Product, Critique, Project
    Criteria
    Use basic camera settings for video
    Capture 40 seconds of footage
    Demonstrate at least five common camera movements
    Video is mp4 and 20- to 40- seconds
    Video includes elements of a story, as specified by the instructor

  7. Apply principles of composition to photographs and video

    Photograph and video project
    Criteria
    Apply the composition rule to photographs and video
    Photographs and/or video show application of The Rule of Third and headroom composition rules
    Apply at least two elements, color, patten, etc. in photograph and video

  8. Apply studio lighting techniques to subjects

    Shooting assignments/photograph (6 images), Quiz, Written Product, Critique
    Criteria
    Apply 3-light set-up lighting techniques
    Portraits incorporate a reflector, backdrop, and small objects
    One image is lit by a hard light
    One image is lit by a soft light
