Description
This class is designed to give you some advanced knowledge of commercial photography and lighting concepts for the business world. Advanced Photoshop techniques will be explored as well as compositing and other commercial lighting theory.

  2. Build studio backdrops and lighting tools
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill demonstration, project
    Criteria
    Identify the various types of cards and reflectors
    V-flats and reflectors are created using foamcore
    Room set is created with painted walls and wood floor
    Backdrop, lighting tool, or other studio set piece is effective according to industry standards and instructor guidelines

  3. Photograph products using light painting tools

    Criteria
    Separate out the different roles lighting plays in a product photo
    Use camera stand, Capture One, long exposure, and manual focus to capture images
    File is named as specified by the instructor
    Format is 2500 pix layered psd or tif
    Subject is a 3-dimensional object
    Layered Photoshop file combines multiple exposures
    Image consists of multiple photos combined in Photoshop
    Image has appropriate exposure, color balance, contrast, cropping, and focus

  4. Produce an ad in partnership with graphic design students

    Criteria
    Meet with graphic design students to plan out the shoot
    Speak with graphic design student(s) to refine and/or confirm their concept
    Execute the designer’s concept
    Image files are delivered to the designer on time
    Delivered image files meet graphic design students’ criteria, such as color balance, exposure, contrast, cropping, and focus
    File is named as specified by the instructor
    Format is 2500 pix jpgs

  5. Create a personal portfolio image
    Assessment Strategies
    Written pre-planning documents, digital images
    Criteria
    Use a concept template
    Execute the photo shoot
    Final products are edited in Photoshop to a portfolio-quality level
    File is named as specified by the instructor
    Format is 2500 pix psd or tif
    Image has effective exposure, color balance, contrast, cropping, and focus
    Concept template is completed according to instructor guidelines
    You act on feedback received before shooting

  6. Create composite images in Photoshop
    Assessment Strategies
    Digital images, form
    Criteria
    Use pre-shoot planning form
    Shoot concept includes multiple images to be combined
    Images are captured in or out of studio
    Match intent, lighting and color, perspective, and foreground background relationship
    Use a system to manage composite assets
    Various images are composited in Photoshop (matching lighting, color balance, contrast, etc.)
    Image has effective exposure, color balance, contrast, cropping, and focus
    Image has been retouched and cleaned up as necessary in Photoshop/ Lightroom
    File consists of multiple images combined in Photoshop
    Concept template is completed according to instructor guidelines
    You act on feedback received before shooting

  7. Analyze professional photo studios

    Speak effectively with a professional photographer
    Describe the studio
    Determine what attributes of these studios and professionals could inform your own career
    Questionnaire meets guidelines specified by the instructor
    Reflection includes attributes and characteristics of the studio and professional

  8. Create animated GIFs
    Assessment Strategies
    Digital images
    Criteria
    GIF is made from a series of your photos
    GIF is lit consistently for animations
    Use Photoshop’s frame animation panel
    GIF meets guidelines specified by the instructor
    GIF is exported correctly for the web
    GIF file is named as specified by the instructor
