Course Information
Description
Emphasis is placed on the study of the commercial building code currently adopted by Wisconsin (International Building Code) and the parameters it places on the design of buildings. Learners will become familiar with using the code as a means of protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the public and will acquire a general knowledge of other codes and standards used in the design of commercial and residential architecture.

  1. Classify the use and occupancy of single and multi-use buildings

  2. Determine the allowable height and area for a building

  3. Explore different construction types as defined by the code

  4. Apply passive and active fire and smoke protection strategies to a building design

  6. Explain concepts of accessible architecture

  7. Investigate the basic concepts of the Existing Building Code

  8. Investigate the basic concepts of the Energy Conservation Code
