Course Information
Description
Introduces students to the basics of statics. Learners study and analyze forces and loading conditions applied to structures and mechanical devices. Areas of study include resultant and equilibrant of forces, moments, nonconcurrent-coplanar forces (trusses), concurrent-noncoplanar forces and static friction. Related engineering analysis software will be utilized throughout the course.

  1. Define science of mechanics and examine its fundamental principles.

  2. Determine resultant of multiple forces acting on a particle.

  3. Use diagrams to assist in the analysis of planar and spatial particle equilibrium problems.

  4. Define mixed triple product and use it to determine the moment of a force about an axis.

  5. Resolve given force into an equivalent force-couple system at another point.

  6. Analyze static equilibrium of rigid bodies in two and three dimensions.

  7. Examine laws of dry friction and use these to consider the equilibrium of rigid bodies where friction exists at contact surfaces.

  8. Define centroids of lines, areas, and volumes.

  9. Analyze trusses by the method of joints.

  10. Describe second moment, or moment of inertia, of an area.
