Course Information
Description
Introduces the student to assembly modeling using SolidWorks, utilizing both bottom-up and top-down assembly modeling techniques. A complete set of working drawings will be created, through individual part drawing and assembly drawing techniques. Model creation will also take place by measurement of an existing part/assembly, allowing the student to practice the reverse engineering process to create model and drawing details. This course serves as a bolt-on to 20-606-231 Introductory Engineering Graphics; two courses taken together are equivalent to GE 2030 at UW-Platteville.

  1. Measure existing machined parts for reverse engineering
    Assessment Strategies
    Measuring strategies demonstrated throughout the class
    Criteria
    Use hand measuring tools such as, calipers, micrometers, protractors, scales to gather measurements
    Measurements are appropriate for the tool used, as identified by the instructor
    You record measurements either by hand drawn sketch, Solidworks software, or identified by the instructor

  2. Create a solid model
    Assessment Strategies
    Electronic part file
    Criteria
    Model includes a fully defined sketch, use of sketch relations, and dimensions
    Mass properties are evaluated within ± 2 percent when appropriate, or identified by the instructor
    Use a file naming convention as identified by instructor
    Units are identified and used correctly
    Use Solidworks software

  3. Build an assembly
    Assessment Strategies
    Electronic assembly file
    Criteria
    Mates between components are constrained unless identified by the instructor
    Fixed component mated to the assembly origin
    Use the top-down assembly approach
    Use the bottom-up assemble approach
    Use a file naming convention as identified by the instructor
    Assembly is created and submitted as a pack and go, or identified by the instructor
    Use Solidworks software in either top down or bottom up approach

  4. Create an engineering drawing
    Assessment Strategies
    Electronic drawing file
    Criteria
    Drawing is dimensioned and annotated
    Correct units are used
    Drawing includes the standard three views
    Drawing captures all the features of the part
    Appropriate use of section view, auxiliary view, and broken out section views, or identified by the instructor
    A part can be manufactured from the drawing
    You use a file naming convention as identified by the instructor
    Drawing file is submitted as an PDF
    Use Solidworks software
