Description
This course develops apprentice skills in precision measurement.  Types of measuring instruments will be compared and then measuring skills using tapes, steel rules, micrometers, calipers, indicators, and gauges will be developed.  This was formerly the C-4 module in related instruction for the MMMP trade apprenticeship.

Course Competencies
  1. Examine different types of precision measurement instruments and their uses
    Criteria
    apprentice selects the proper measuring device for a given application
    apprentice explains proper storage and care of precision equipment
    apprentice takes and interprets readings to within required tolerance
    apprentice explains calibration for various measuring devices

  2. Take measurements with tape measures and steel rules
    Criteria
    apprentice correctly interprets measurement readings
    apprentice makes length measurements to the required tolerance
    apprentice makes area measurements to the required tolerance

  3. Take measurements with micrometers
    Criteria
    apprentice interprets readings to within required tolerance
    apprentice can make measurements within given specifications
    apprentice can identify different types of micrometers and their parts
    apprentice selects the correct micrometer for an application

  4. Take measurements with calipers
    Criteria
    apprentice interprets readings to within required tolerance
    apprentice selects the correct caliper for an application
    apprentice can make measurements within given specifications

  5. Take measurements with indicators
    Criteria
    apprentice takes and interprets readings to within required tolerance
    apprentice selects the correct indicator(s) for an application
    apprentice selects correct attachment for an application
    apprentice connects the attachment according to requirements of the job

  6. Take height measurements with various types of gauges
    Criteria
    apprentice stacks jo blocks to a specific value
    apprentice takes and interprets readings to within required tolerance
    apprentice sets up various gauges according to specifications
    apprentice can make measurements within given specifications
