Description
Finishing is both an art and a science. This course demystifies the process of finishing wood and explores the materials used. Hand applied, brushed and sprayed finishes are covered. Proper finish selection and safe use of finishing products are emphasized.

  1. Handle finishing materials safely

    Explain OSHA requirements for storage and disposal of finish materials
    Identify where to locate and how to interpret Material Safety Data Sheets
    Identify response procedures for handling spills and disposing hazardous materials

    Identify PPE for Chemical safety
    Follow procedures for cleaning and maintaining brushes

  2. Prepare surfaces for finish

    Criteria
    Sequence abrasives and sanding patterns effectively
    Raise grain for particular finishes
    Identify three methods to remove residual dust from material

  3. Mix and apply penetrating oil finishes

    Criteria
    Oil samples conform to AWI standards
    Differentiate between Polymerized oil, Linseed oil, Tung oil, and Varnish/Oil blends
    Oil/Varnish blend is created effectively

    Lacquer samples conform to AWI standards
    Identify solvents for reducing and retarding lacquer
    Identify the characteristics of lacquer, CAB lacquer, and Pre/Post-catalized lacquers

  8. Test the viscosity of coatings

    Identify a #2 Zahn cup or its equivalent
    Use a chart to cross match cups
    Follow procedures for measuring and recording viscosity
    Obtain viscosity recommendations from a finish supplier

    Use a wet film gauge to measure film thickness
    Calculate dry film thickness effectively using the solids content information from the supplier
