Course Information
Description
This competency grouping is part of the WTCS Faculty Quality Assurance System (FQAS) Competency Framework. The FQAS Competency Framework contains shared competencies and performance standards that will be utilized for professional development under the Faculty Quality Assurance System. Course Competencies
  1. Analyze how your identity and biases influence student success
    Assessment Strategies
    Oral, Written, or Skills Assessment
    Criteria
    consider the potential differences in experiences of various populations (e.g., overrepresented, underrepresented, minoritized groups)
    analyze the ways in which your own identities intersect
    identify the potential relationship of your identities to the status and opportunities of your position in society
    reflect on the impact your identities and position in society has on the learning environment you create
    identify language, behaviors, and assumptions that are harmful to student success
    identify positive changes you could make in your practices with your students to increase student success

  2. Use resources to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the learning community
    Assessment Strategies
    Oral, Written, or Skills Assessment
    Criteria
    analyze the local student demographics and their impact on the learning community
    explore diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives at the college
    leverage national, community, and college resources to align your teaching practices with the college equity and inclusion initiatives
    connect students to relevant resources and organizations (student clubs, diversity, equity, and inclusion leaders, departments and or offices, etc.)

  3. Cultivate an inclusive learning environment that meets the needs of every learner

    Criteria
    demonstrate cultural competence in student interactions
    evaluate your current instructional practices and identify areas for improvement
    implement strategies that close opportunity gaps
    use inclusive and culturally responsive content and materials
    use strategies that are sensitive to student's lived experiences and environments (trauma-informed, poverty informed, financial insecurities, etc.)
    foster relationships with students through empathy and understanding of student’s needs
    address the social needs of learners (i.e., develop belonging, sense of community, group work, icebreakers)
    create a learning environment that mitigates the effects of negative stereotypes
    utilize techniques to ensure all students are included and respected in the learning environment
