Course Information
Description
This course emphasizes the development of vocabulary and reading comprehension skills needed to successfully complete college level coursework. Reading comprehension skills are practiced in a variety of content specific excerpts from college textbooks and other reading sources. The focus of the class is building and strengthening reading strategies to enable learners to complete their academic goals. Students will use a a variety of printed and technology-based materials including functional/workplace/life skill readings, prose, poetry, etc. Some teaching plans include optional activities that may be used in the classroom delivery of the course.

  1. Employ advanced reading strategies to process written materials

    Criteria
    Select/adjust reading rate strategies to the purpose and difficulty of the material
    Apply word recognition skills using a variety of strategies including rereading, finding context clues, and analyzing word structures
    Infer the meaning of unfamiliar words in the context of a passage by examining known words, phrases and structures
    Comprehend reading by using strategies: activating prior knowledge, establishing purpose, self-correcting, self-monitoring, rereading, making predictions, finding context clues, developing visual images, applying knowledge of text structures, etc
    Read with level-appropriate fluency and accuracy
    Relate how written texts and visual representation connect to create meaning
    Identify a purpose for reading, such as to gain information, to learn about diverse viewpoints, to make decisions or for enjoyment
    Use knowledge of sentence and word structure, word origins, visual images and context clues to understand unfamiliar words and clarify meaning
    Use knowledge of visual features, such as headings and bold face print, as aids to comprehension
    Summarize, and paraphrase passages chosen for specific purposes.

    Evaluate themes and main ideas considering audience and purpose

  3. Read to acquire information

    Criteria
    Identify a topic of interest then seek information by investigating available resources, such as newspaper, phone book, map, Internet websites, etc.
    Interpret and use technical resources such as charts, tables, travel schedules, timelines, and manuals
    Compare, contrast, and evaluate the relative accuracy and usefulness of information from different sources
    Identify and explain information, main ideas, and organization found in a variety of informational passages
    Adjust reading pace (skimming, scanning, and reading) to the difficulty of the text and purpose for reading

  4. Develop vocabulary of words, phrases, and idioms to improve communication

    Use knowledge of roots, prefixes, and suffixes to interpret and convey the meaning of words and build vocabulary

    Consult dictionaries, glossaries, handbooks, and grammar texts when needed

  5. Use a variety of informational resources to make decisions

    Evaluate resources appropriate to a particular task
    Identify book features including table of contents, glossary, and index to locate information

    Compile, organize, and evaluate information, and summarize what has been learned
    Identify and explain the use of stereotypes and biases evident in various media
