Description
ESL Advanced Oral Skills for Technical Careers is designed for Advanced Adult ESL students preparing to transition to the Workforce, certificate or 2-year Technical Colleges. The course prepares students to listen and speak for vocational purposes or technical careers while learning career-specific discourse patterns, vocabulary, grammar, and digital literacy.

Course Competencies
  1. Introduce yourself to your classmates, talk about your goals, and become familiar with the text used in this course (Project Success 5).

  2. Develop interpersonal relationships at the workplace, enhance their ability to respond appropriately to emails in a professional setting, and raise self-awareness by assessing job skills.

  3. Demonstrate workplace confidence by expressing concerns about potential problems. Weigh the pros and cons of certain options. Assess a workplace situation and make a decision using information available.

  4. Demonstrate the ability to check on progress as it relates to projects at work, and seek clarification using tag questions. Compare an invoice and a purchase order and who uses them. Practice effective workplace skills by asking for advice and setting appropriate professional goals.

  5. Demonstrate workplace competency by asking for help when needed. Assess strengths and weaknesses as a potential employee. Tell a colleague how to complete a job task using clear instructions. Weigh the pros and cons of certain employment ads in relation to one’s own interests and skills.

  6. Identify possible problems that arise in a workplace setting. Develop skills to respond appropriately to criticism. Contrast appropriate and inappropriate responses to criticism and their effects. Discuss the importance of offering help to colleagues.

  7. Explain the situation to accurately describe and accident. Identify unsafe working conditions and devise a plan for increasing safety. Discuss appropriate safety precautions. Prepare for an interview by researching a company.

  8. Demonstrate a growing awareness of time management skills. Understand that time management has a trickle-down effect if it is not practiced correctly. Practice effective workplace skills by asking for permission (to take time off). Evaluate common interview questions.

  9. Identify areas of improvement in job performance and develop the skills to give constructive criticism to others. Discuss job advancement based on job performance. Develop a definition of job success. Identify aspects of successful interviewing skills.
