Description
ESL Intermediate for College Transfer and Technical Careers modules A-D are designed for adult ESL students. Emphasis is on using English in different situations, comprehending a range of written materials, and writing a variety of sentences and paragraphs. Other topics include: seeking clarification, using grammar, employing pronunciation strategies, and completing forms and workplace documents. Students learn computer literacy, critical thinking, and problem solving.

Course Competencies
  1. Employ interpersonal communication skills, review basic ‘be-verb’ grammar and ask/answer clarification, wh- and yes/no questions, and learn clarification phrases

  2. Develop vocabulary for traffic and transportation (on the road)
    Criteria
    Vocabulary: parts of a car, comparative vocabulary
    Listening/speaking: car maintenance, traffic accidents
    Pronunciation word-stress
    Grammar: present time clauses, past continuous, definite/indefinite articles
    Reading: cloze reading, reading charts
    Writing: write a complaint letter to a city official

  3. Develop vocabulary related to food, health and nutrition
    Criteria
    Listening and Speaking: Talk about eating habits, family health and dental health
    Pronunciation: do as d’ya; intonation with Wh- and yes/no questions
    Grammar: Adverbs or frequency; Verbs + Gerund as Object; and Gerunds as Subjects
    Reading:  Life Skills: Read a nutritional label and talk about diets; School Lunches-Understanding facts and opinions
    Writing: Structure: Description. Describe your eating habits

  4. Develop language skills related to job expectations
    Criteria
    Vocabulary:  Job skills
    Listening and Speaking: Ask for clarification, Talk about expectations on the job, Respond appropriately to correction
    Grammar: One and Ones, Verb + Object + Infinitive, Reported Speech: commands and requests with tell/ask
    Reading: Working the Late Shifts, Skimming, Life Skills: Identify Safety Hazards at Work
    Writing: Write about your job
