Description
ESL Intermediate for College Transfer and Technical Careers modules A-D are designed for adult ESL students. Emphasis is on using English in different situations, comprehending a range of written materials, and writing a variety of sentences and paragraphs. Other topics include: seeking clarification, using grammar, employing pronunciation strategies, and completing forms and workplace documents. Students learn computer literacy, critical thinking, and problem solving.

Course Competencies
  1. Employ interpersonal communication skills, review basic ‘be-verb’ grammar and ask/answer clarification, wh- and yes/no questions, and learn clarification phrases

  2. Develop vocabulary related to employment
    Criteria
    Vocabulary: qualities of employees
    Listening/speaking: Talk about work experience. Listen to a radio commercial, a radio talk show, and a conversation at a job interview
    Pronunciation: final –s and penultimate stress in words ending with –sion or -tion
    Grammar: present perfect with for and since and “be” + adjective + infinitive
    Reading Skill: making inferences. Read a letter of recommendation, an online job advertisement, and an article about job interviews
    Writing: write a thank-you letter for a job interview and a list of questions for a job interview. Letter format

  3. Develop vocabulary related to travel
    Criteria
    Vocabulary: people, things, and places in an airport
    Listening and Speaking: Talk about airline travel, delays, and cancellations. Listen to a an airport announcement and two telephone conversations
    Pronunciation: can, sentence stress
    Grammar: Can/could, be able to, would/could/will/can/may, possessive adjectives and pronouns
    Reading Skill: Getting meaning from context. Read an article about traveling safety
    Writing: Write about a problem you had when you traveled, describe the problem

  4. Develop language skills related to shopping experiences
    Criteria
    Vocabulary:  Problems with purchases
    Listening and Speaking: Talk about product defects, getting a good deal, problems with cellphone service, and prices. Listen to a customer making an exchange and two conversations
    Grammar: Noun clauses, comparative adjectives, and as…as with adjectives
    Reading Skill: Using formatting clues. Read a a warranty and an article about comparison shopping
    Writing: Write about shopping experiences. Compare two stores
