Course Information
Description
This eight-week course is linked in sequence with and follows Reading Foundations 2. The course continues to build vocabulary, fluency, and background knowledge through basic readings in social studies, science, and literature for those whose goal is to pass the GED/HSED, to improve English language skills, or to achieve personal, work, civic, family, or other educational goals. Learners make inferences, identify patterns of organization in text, and distinguish between fact and opinion. Learners write responses to text demonstrating understanding of text structures and supporting opinions with reasons, examples, or facts.

Course Competencies
  1. Employ basic reading strategies to process written materials.

    Criteria
    apply word recognition skills using a variety of strategies including rereading, finding context clues, and analyzing word structures.
    select reading rate strategies and techniques based on purpose and difficulty of material
    infer the meaning of unfamiliar words in the context of a passage by examining known words, phrases and structures
    comprehend reading by using strategies: activating prior knowledge, establishing purpose, self-correcting, self-monitoring, rereading, making predictions, finding context clues, developing visual images, applying knowledge of text structures, etc.
    read aloud and silently with level-appropriate fluency, accuracy, and expression
    relate written texts and visual representations to create meaning
    use organizational features of texts, such as headings, paragraphs, and format, to improve understanding
    you identify a purpose for reading, such as to gain information
    you locate, summarize and evaluate a written passage of text for a chosen purpose
