Course Information
Description
Computer Basics 1 is designed to help the learner to succeed in post-secondary education, in the workplace and at a personal level. The course will introduce basic computer operation and commands to computer beginners or inexperienced users. This course covers the basic vocabulary and rudimentary practice for students to be able to understand further computer instruction. There is an optional portion of the curriculum that focuses on teaching students the basics of Blackboard and how to obtain a student login and password.

  2. Explore Microsoft Word.

    Criteria
    you self-evaluate your current skill level by completing a pre-assessment activity about Microsoft Word
    you label a diagram of the major components of the Windows desktop
    you access Microsoft Word processing program unassisted
    you create a Word document with your name, date and a minimum of five sentences
    you save a Microsoft Word document with your name, date and five sentences
    you demonstrate opening a saved document to lab instructor

  3. Perform basic computer operations.

    Criteria
    you complete tutorial on BBC's computer tutor
    you open and close various windows unassisted by instructor
    you create a Mircosoft Word document with a minimum 5 sentences using correct capitalization and punctuation
    you demonstrate how to save a document to an instructor unassisted
    you demonstrate to an instructor how to open a saved document and use a dialog box to print

  4. Use Internet.

    Criteria
    you open the internet and find internet sites recommended by instructor
    you access the Computer Basics website unassisted
    you complete a handout about common features of browsers
    you identify at least 3 search engines: google, yahoo, bing
    you describe 3 sites you reached from the 3 different search engines you have identified
    you explain at least 3 different ways to access the Internet for free

  5. Introduce MATC student login and Blackboard (Optional).

    you create a MATC student login.
    you create a password for your MATC student login.
    you successfully logon to a learning center computer using your MATC student login and password unassisted.
    you demonstrate navigating Inside MATC to find e-mail or a blackboard login.
