Explores the structure, composition, and related glands of the skin. Students also characterize skin diseases and disorders as contagious or non-contagious to protect themselves and their clients.

    Criteria
    You define terms related to the structure, composition, and related glands of the skin.
    You describe the functions of the skin to include: sensation, hydration, absorption, regulation, protection, excretion, and respiration.
    You label a diagram identifying the five layers of the epidermis as stratum corneum, lucidum, granulosum, and germinativum.
    You provide the purpose and characteristics of each of the layers of the epidermis.
    You identify the structures within the dermis of the skin to include collagen, blood and lymph vessels, nerves, sweat glands, oil glands, hair follicle, arrector pili muscles, and papillae.
    You provide the functions for sudoriferous and sebaceous glands within the dermis of the skin.
    You identify the structures within the subcutaneous layer of the skin.
    You provide the purpose and functions of the subcutaneous layer.
    You identify the purpose for melanin within our skin as protective.

    You identify characteristics of secondary lesions to include scales, crusts, excoriations, fissures, scars, and ulcers.
    You identify hypertrophies to include callus, verruca, and skin tags.
    You identify pigmentation abnormalities as melanoderma and leucoderma.
    You identify disorders of the sebaceous glands to include comedones, milia, acne, rosacea, asteatosis, seborrhea, steatoma, furuncles, and carbuncles.
    You identify disorders of the sudoriferous glands to include bromidrosis, anhidrosis, hyperhidrosis, and miliaria rubra.
    You identify inflammatory disorders as dermatitis and eczema.
    You identify conditions that prohibit services to include client pain, redness, swelling, itching, or open lesions on the skin or scalp.
    You identify the conditions that are present which prohibit performing services as: herpes simplex, ulcers, verruca, hives, rosacea, furuncle, carbuncle, miliaria rubra, dermatitis, and eczema.
