Course Information
Description
Develop skills that relate the chemistry of shampoo and conditioning products to human hair. Students identify the anatomy of the cranium, shoulders, and back as they relate to hair and scalp treatments. Students will integrate State of Wisconsin Administrative Codes related to Infection Control. Students will determine skills required in preparation for a hair and scalp treatment to include consultation skills, draping techniques, and the performance of a shampoo and scalp treatment service.

Course Competencies
  1. Relate the chemistry of shampoo and conditioning products to human hair.
    Assessment Strategies
    through participation in course activities.
    by completion of corresponding assignments.

    by taking a Hair and Scalp Care written test/exam at the end of Learning Plan 5.
    Criteria
    You select a minimum of four shampoos and four conditioners specific to different types of hair. Hair types include, but are not limited to damaged hair, thinning hair, oily hair, and normal hair.
    You identify the fragrance of selected products.
    You research active surfactants of selected shampoo products.
    You research the purpose of other active ingredients in shampoo products.
    You determine the ph of selected shampoo products.
    You research the purpose of active ingredients in conditioner products.
    You determine the pH of conditioner products.
    You specify the directions for the use of all products.
    You specify the selling points of each of the selected products.
    You create a price comparison of each of the selected products according to available sizes.
    You assemble portfolio in a neat and creative manner.
    You include a Table of Contents and a Bibliography.

  2. Identify the anatomy of the cranium, chest, shoulders, and back as they relate to hair and scalp treatments.

    Criteria
    You identify the bones of the cranium.
    You identify muscles and nerves affected when performing a scalp massage.
    You label a diagram identifying the bones or the cranium, neck, back, chest, and shoulder.
    You label a diagram identifying the muscles of the scalp, ear, mastication, neck, and upper back and the motor nerves pertinent to a scalp treatment.

  3. Identify State of Wisconsin Administrative Codes related to hair and scalp treatments.

    You list safety and sanitation guidelines related to hair and scalp treatments.
    You research Wisconsin State Administrative Code BC 2 .02, BC 2.06, BC 2.07, BC 2.08, BC 4.01, and BC 4.02 regarding Infection control procedures.
    You identify salon situations related to Wisconsin Administrative Code.

  4. Demonstrate Consultation, Draping, and Prep Skills for a hair and scalp treatment.

    by taking a Hair and Scalp Care written test/exam at the end of Learning Plan 5.
    Criteria
    You use consultation skills for a Hair and Scalp Treatment.
    You identify procedures for draping of a client for a Hair and Scalp Treatment.
    You list order of steps in the performance of a Hair and Scalp Treatment.

  5. Evaluate a Shampoo and Scalp Treatment Service - (Face-to-Face Class).

    by evaluating a student using the Scalp and Hair Care Evaluation Worksheet.
    by taking a Hair and Scalp Care written test/exam at the end of Learning Plan 5.
    Criteria
    You consult regarding a scalp treatment.
    You drape Your partner in accordance to a wet service.
    You analyze hair and scalp prior to beginning the scalp treatment service.
    You brush hair in small segments without irritating scalp.
    You shampoo hair while monitoring water temperature.
    You apply conditioning treatment over hair in a relaxing manner.
    You place partner under heat if necessary.
    You perform massage movements according to protocol in textbook in a relaxing manner.
    You rinse conditioner from hair completely.
    You follow safety and sanitary procedures throughout service.
    You clean up and sanitize sink when completed.
