Course Information
Description
This is the first course in the related instruction portion of the Welder-Fabricator Apprenticeship program. This course introduces the trade, welding and fabrication safety, print reading, trade math, metal cutting, visual inspection, and an orientation to the college and this apprenticeship program.

Course Competencies
  1. Adhere to safety rules and regulations (2 hours)

    Criteria
    apprentice participates in lab/shop safety training provided by instructor
    apprentice completes school safety orientation
    apprentice demonstrates safe work practices during shops and labs
    apprentice uses proper PPE at all times, including eyes, head, face, ears, fingers, toes, hands, feet and lungs
    apprentice protects self and others from injury and accident including possible electrocution and electrical hazards
    apprentice protects against fires and is prepared to use fire extinguishers
    apprentice applies AWS and ANSI Z49 welding health and safety standards correctly
    apprentice applies OSHA standards appropriately
    apprentice maintains clean and safe work areas
    apprentice uses hand and power tools properly
    apprentice uses shop equipment and machine safeguards correctly
    apprentice lifts and moves materials properly
    apprentice uses proper rigging techniques

  2. Apply math to the trade and welding-fabrication work processes (22 hours)

    apprentice converts units commonly used in metal fabrication and welding
    apprentice solves math problems involving simple algebra and solving for unknowns
    apprentice applies basic trigonometry to metal fabrication work processes
    apprentice solves math problems in both US and metric systems

  3. Interpret prints and drawings (32 hours)

  5. Perform machine and automated cutting (6 hours)

  6. Inspect parts, welds, and cut edges (4 hours)
