Description
Course compares types of sheet metal and tools used by the trade. Apprentices will develop skills related to fabricating sheet metal and structural steel and then erecting structural steel. This course was formerly the M-9 module in related instruction for the MMMP apprenticeship programs.

Course Competencies
  1. Examine different types of sheet metal and sheet metal tools
    Assessment Strategies
    by laying out an assigned project
    by explaining the proper use of sheet metal forming tools
    Criteria
    the layout has accurate dimensions and bend allowances
    the layout has correct numbers for the corresponding print
    apprentice explanation includes safety considerations
    apprentice explains the proper sequence of bends
    apprentice how to select the proper size of material such as thickness, gauge etc.
    apprentice explains tool selection for a specific function

  2. Fabricate using sheet metal
    Assessment Strategies
    by making a tool tray and or a funnel
    Criteria
    the tool tray has proper spot welds
    the funnel has proper solder joints
    the tool tray or funnel has smooth joints and seams
    assembled tool tray or funnel meets the dimensions specified

  3. Install fabricated sheet metal
    Assessment Strategies
    by installing a guard
    Criteria
    apprentice has selected the proper fasteners for the installation
    apprentice has selected the proper tools for the installation
    apprentice ensures alignment before final installation
    apprentice takes into account ease future removal of the guard
    apprentice verifies that the guard fulfills the job for which it was designed
    apprentice complies with safety precautions during installation such as lockout tagout, aisles blocked off, etc.

  4. Fabricate using structural steel
    Assessment Strategies
    by making the pieces for a stand
    Criteria
    the stand pieces are made to the proper dimension
    the stand pieces have holes drilled to proper dimensions
    the stand pieces are fully prepped including de-burred, sand-blasted, rust-treated etc.
    apprentice selects hardware for fastening that is appropriate to the project
    apprentice uses an oxy-gas torch to notch metal as required
    apprentice follows rigging safety procedures as required
    apprentice completes a loose assembly to check fit-up
    apprentice locates the correct torque for a specific fastener

  5. Erect structural steel
    Assessment Strategies
    by erecting a stand
    Criteria
    the assembled stand meets the dimensions specified
    apprentice applies rust proofing at the correct time in the assembly process
    apprentice erects the stand in the proper sequence
    apprentice erects the stand on the correct location
    apprentice selects and uses the proper tools for the job
