Description
Course compares gear types and applications. Apprentices will develop skills inspecting gear assemblies, troubleshooting gear problems, removing gears and components, and reassembling gear drive systems. This course was formerly the M-5 module in related instruction for the MMMP apprenticeship programs.

  1. Examine different gear types and their applications
    Assessment Strategies
    by identifying gear types in a given application
    Criteria
    apprentice identifies gear types correctly
    apprentice identifies the gear material
    apprentice identifies the correct application for each gear type
    apprentice correctly defines gear related terms such as: backlash, pitch, etc.
    apprentice can determine the gear ratio

  2. Inspect gear assemblies
    Assessment Strategies
    by inspecting given gears or assemblies
    Criteria
    apprentice can explain Lock Out / Tag Out (LO/TO) procedures
    apprentice can identify potential problems encountered during inspection
    apprentice can list possible causes and solutions for identified problems
    apprentice uses proper tools during inspection
    apprentice documents inspection results according to established procedures

  3. Troubleshoot gear and related problems
    Assessment Strategies
    by troubleshooting gear and related problems for a given application
    Criteria
    apprentice can explain Lock Out / Tag Out (LO/TO) procedures
    apprentice can assess available data for patterns, inconsistencies, etc.
    apprentice identifies various types of gear and related failures
    apprentice can explain how to use their senses in the troubleshooting process

  4. Remove gears and related drive components
    Assessment Strategies
    by removing a given gear or assembly
    by removing related components such as covers, guards etc.
    Criteria
    apprentice can explain correct LockOut / Tag Out (LO/TO) procedure as necessary
    apprentice selects the appropriate removal method for a specific application
    apprentice selects the appropriate tools for a specific application
    apprentice explains proper care of components to prevent damage and contamination during and after disassembly
    apprentice explains the importance of inspecting all related components for wear and damage during the removal process

  5. Reassemble gear assemblies
    Assessment Strategies
    by reassembling a given gear assembly
    Criteria
    apprentice can identify all correct tolerances per manufacturers or other technical specifications
    apprentice can select the correct gears and related components for the application
    apprentice can explain the importance of cleanliness in the reassembly process
