Description
Course compares different belt types and drive components. Apprentices will develop skills related to inspecting, troubleshooting, removing, selecting, and installing belt drive systems. This course was formerly the M-4 module for related instruction in the MMMP apprenticeship programs.

  1. Examine different types of belts and their related components

    apprentice differentiates belt types by construction and use
    apprentice identifies different types of sheaves and related drives
    apprentice identifies the correct use for different types of sheaves and related drives
    apprentice can explain the correct handling and storage techniques for belts and related components

  2. Inspect belt drive systems
    Assessment Strategies
    conditions under which you will demonstrate your competence will be established by the course instructor.
    Criteria
    apprentice recognizes potential problems upon inspection
    apprentice can identify and then explain when a component is worn out
    apprentice identifies alignment problems
    apprentice can articulate reasons a misalignment may have occurred

  3. Troubleshoot belt drive systems
    Assessment Strategies
    conditions under which you will demonstrate your competence will be established by the course instructor.
    Criteria
    apprentice applies correct lockout tagout procedure as necessary
    apprentice can list possible causes for a problem and then systematically reduce the list to a final cause or causes
    apprentice can formulate an action for correction of a problem
    apprentice selects and uses the proper technical references
    apprentice can identify and then explain when a component is worn out

  4. Remove belt drive components

    Criteria
    apprentice applies correct lockout tagout procedure as necessary
    apprentice selects an appropriate removal method
    apprentice inspects surrounding and related components during removal procedures

  5. Select a belt for a belt drive system

    apprentice matches belt by type
    apprentice matches belt by size
    apprentice demonstrates use of belt and sheave gauges according to standard practice

  6. Install a belt in a belt drive system

    Criteria
    apprentice applies correct lockout tagout procedure as necessary
    apprentice has selected the correct belt and related components for installation
    apprentice follows installation procedures according to standard practice
    apprentice follows installation procedures according to applicable technical manuals
    all sheaves and related components are in place and installed according to specification
    all guards are in place and installed according to specification
