Description
Course compares different pump types and their applications. Apprentices will complete a field inspection of pumps and learn how to troubleshoot, remove, overhaul, install and perform preventative maintenance on pumps. This course was formerly the M-3 module for related instruction in the MMMP apprenticeship programs.

  1. Examine different pump types and their application
    Criteria
    apprentice can identify pump types
    apprentice match pump to its application
    apprentice can differentiate the duties of different pumps
    apprentice can identify the pump drive
    apprentice can identify the pump parts
    apprentice can select the proper horsepower and drive speed for a pump

  2. Complete a field inspection of pumps
    Criteria
    apprentice describes safety procedures
    apprentice refers to appropriate checklists when/where available
    apprentice can identify defective hoses, piping etc.
    apprentice can identify if there is a problem with the pump
    apprentice describe what actions should be taken if defects are found

  3. Troubleshoot pumps
    Criteria
    apprentice creates a list of possible causes
    apprentice narrows possible causes to a specific cause
    apprentice formulates an action plan
    apprentice makes repairs in accordance with manufacturers recommendations and safety procedures
    apprentice completes all required documentation

  4. Remove a pump
    Criteria
    apprentice has complied with lockout tagout procedures
    apprentice has contained or released all power sources
    apprentice has all equipment is in "safe" position
    apprentice has followed manufacturers specifications
    apprentice has complied with all rigging safety procedures
    apprentice sealed all open lines

  5. Overhaul a pump
    Criteria
    apprentice properly identifies the pump
    apprentice has all the necessary reference materials at hand
    apprentice can measure all tolerances and fits to within manufacturers specifications
    apprentice can differentiate reusable from reparable parts
    apprentice follows a logical procedure
    apprentice keeps parts clean, organized, and protected
    apprentice reassembles pumps to manufacturers specifications
    apprentice fills in all required paperwork

  6. Install a pump
    Criteria
    the pump is properly prepared for installation
    apprentice primes the pump according to manufacturers specifications
    the pump connections are made properly
    the pump and drive have the correct rotation
    the drive is aligned to the pump to within manufacturers specifications
    apprentice adjust pressure to within manufacturers specifications
    apprentice checks for leaks
    apprentice checks the machine for proper operation
    apprentice fills in all required paperwork

  7. Perform pump preventive maintenance
    Criteria
    apprentice can accurately interpret the PM sheet
    apprentice follows the PM sheet
    apprentice can explain the safety considerations related to PM including lockout/tagout and pressure sources
    apprentice can explain how the system is supposed to work
    apprentice can identify common pump problems
    apprentice accurately identifies the equipment that is described on the PM sheet/workorder
    apprentice fills in all required PM paperwork
    apprentice can check pressure and flows
