Course Information
Description
Course compares different coupling types and examines common misalignment problems. Apprentices will develop skills related to inspecting, troubleshooting, and preparing couplings for removal and installation, and also aligning and lubricating couplings. This course was formerly the M-2 module for related instruction in the MMMP apprenticeship programs.

Course Competencies
  1. Examine different coupling types and misalignment

    apprentice correctly identifies coupling type
    apprentice explains coupling application

  2. Inspect couplings
    Assessment Strategies
    conditions under which you will demonstrate your competence will be established by the course instructor.
    Criteria
    apprentice inspects inserts
    apprentice looks for seal leakage
    apprentice analyzes vibration data (if available)
    apprentice checks to see if any equipment movement has occurred
    apprentice can create a list of possible causes for failure

  3. Troubleshoot couplings
    Assessment Strategies
    conditions under which you will demonstrate your competence will be established by the course instructor.
    Criteria
    apprentice collects as much applicable data as possible
    apprentice creates a list of possible causes
    apprentice narrows possible causes to specific cause
    apprentice makes repair in accordance with manufacturers recommendations and safety procedures
    apprentice completes all required documentation

  4. Prepare for a coupling removal or installation
    Assessment Strategies
    conditions under which you will demonstrate your competence will be established by the course instructor.
    Criteria
    apprentice gathers the required tools
    apprentice accurately explains specific tool application
    apprentice has prepared the base
    apprentice ensures lockout tagout procedures are followed
    apprentice checks bore and shaft size
    apprentice checks keys/pins and uses a shear key/pin where required
    apprentice checks shaft runout
    apprentice does not cause damage during disassembly
    apprentice inspects parts once disassembled
    apprentice inspects new parts for defects

  5. Align a coupling
    Assessment Strategies
    conditions under which you will demonstrate your competence will be established by the course instructor.
    Criteria
    coupling gap is correct for the application
    coupling is aligned axially and radially within the manufacturers specifications
    associated equipment has no loose or unbolted parts
    apprentice measures and interprets the runout to required tolerance
    apprentice aligns coupling using the straight edge/coupling wedge method
    apprentice aligns coupling using the dial indicator method
    apprentice aligns coupling using the laser method

  6. Lubricate couplings
    Assessment Strategies
    conditions under which you will demonstrate your competence will be established by the course instructor.
    Criteria
    coupling is not overpacked
    apprentice cleans up any spilled lubrication
    apprentice cleaned out grease fitting (if applicable) before adding grease
    apprentice ensures that the proper amount of lubricant has been added according to manufacturers specifications
    apprentice has reinstalled guards (if applicable)
    apprentice has completed applicable log entries
