Description
Apprentices will examine bearing types and applications, and compare equipment bearings. Then learners will develop skills related to bearing inspection, selection, removal, mounting, lubrication and diagnosing bearing failures. Course was formerly the M-1 module in related instruction for the MMMP apprenticeship.

  1. Examine different bearing types and their applications

    Criteria
    apprentice identifies load types on a shaft
    apprentice identifies bearing types and use
    apprentice can analyze the reason for failure when examining a failed bearing
    apprentice matches bearing numbering nomenclature to the bearing type
    apprentice can find the correct reference for bearing numbering

  2. Handle equipment bearings
    Assessment Strategies
    conditions under which you will demonstrate your competence will be established by the course instructor.
    Criteria
    apprentice never touches bearings with bare hands if it is going back into storage
    apprentice unwraps a bearing in an environment where it will not be contaminated
    apprentice handles bearing with care
    apprentice stores bearings where they will not be damaged or contaminated
    apprentice keeps bearing covered until the time it is installed

  3. Inspect a bearing

    Criteria
    apprentice can provide an accurate report of bearing condition
    apprentice identifies possible causes of bearing failure (if failure occurred)
    apprentice identifies proper or improper lubrication
    apprentice has verified the correct mounting clearances

  4. Analyze bearing failures

    Criteria
    apprentice collects as much applicable data as possible concerning the failure
    apprentice creates a list of possible failure causes
    apprentice narrows possible causes to specific cause
    apprentice makes repair in accordance with manufacturers recommendations and safety procedures
    apprentice completes all required documentation

  5. Remove a bearing

    Criteria
    apprentice complies with safety precautions
    apprentice has not damaged the shaft and related equipment
    apprentice does not destroy the bearing
    apprentice does not leave parts of the bearing behind in the machine
    apprentice uses tools that are sized correctly and applicable for the job
    apprentice handles both new and used bearings with care

  6. Select a bearing

    Criteria
    apprentice ensures that the correct replacement bearing has be selected
    apprentice has matched the selected bearing for the application
    apprentice identifies the type of load, rpm, heat, pre-load, sealed bearing, lubrication requirements, lubrication differences, etc.

  7. Mount a bearing

    apprentice selects the proper lubrication according to manufacturers specifications
    apprentice cleans out old lubricant according to manufacturers specifications
    apprentice correctly identifies bearings that do not require lubricant
    bearing has the correct amount of grease/lubricant
