50-423-717Hydraulics for MMMP Trades (C-8)
Course Information
Description
This course provides instruction to apprentices concerning many aspects of inspecting, servicing, and troubleshooting hydraulic systems and components. Apprentices will learn safety related issues and be taught proper safety procedures for working with hydraulic systems and components. It was formerly the C-8 module for the MMMP apprenticeship program.

Define the principles of hydraulicsAssessment Strategieson actual or simulated hydraulic systemsshowing where and how principles are being appliedCriteriaapprentice shows where formulas would apply in given real system problemsapprentice uses the correct hydraulic termsapprentice can cite a principle for a given situation in a hydraulic systemapprentice relates a principle to where it is working in a system
-
Interpret hydraulic schematic diagramsAssessment Strategiesusing references used in the fieldon a sketch (using a symbol template) with circuit parameters provided by the instructorCriteriaapprentice correctly recognizes fluid power symbolsapprentice recognizes the difference between hydraulic and pneumatic symbolsapprentice interpretation includes identification of the component functionapprentice interpretation includes describing the component function
-
Analyze the function of hydraulic system componentsAssessment Strategiesusing references used in the fieldexamining a variety of components provided by the instructorCriteriaapprentice differentiates between different componentsapprentice explains the function of common hydraulic componentsapprentice identifies typical applications of common hydraulic components
-
Apply troubleshooting principles to hydraulic systemsAssessment Strategiesusing references used in the fielddocumenting specific faults and their fixes for a hydraulic component in your system layoutusing an instructor developed, written description of a breakdown of a specific hydraulic componentCriteriaapprentice can locate, or describe exactly how to locate, manufacturers troubleshooting references for hydraulic componentsapprentice gives a clear explanation of what a selected hydraulic component does and how it operatesapprentice identifies exactly what is, or what would happen for a specific component malfunctionapprentice lists possible causes for a fault and isolates or shows how they would isolate a fault of a componentapprentice explains the methods and where to measure pressure in a hydraulic systemapprentice explains the methods and where to measure flow ratesapprentice diagnoses seal, packing and gasket leakage problemsapprentice matches problems with remedies for inoperative systemsapprentice explains repair test procedure for the componentapprentice documents or provides through explanation of documentation proceduresapprentice provides an accurate description of repair procedure including references and tools required to repair or replace the componentapprentice complies with safety precautions at each phase of the troubleshooting processapprentice describes the safety hazards related to the operation of hydraulic components
-
Remove construct and install conductors and connectorsAssessment Strategiesremoving connectors and conductorsinstalling connectors and conductorsgiven manufacturers technical publicationsCriteriaapprentice identifies symbols for connectors and conductors without errorapprentice describes the use of different types of conductors and connectors for a given systemapprentices constructs and installs conductors that meet manufacturer specifications when completedapprentice explains the install procedure for each type of common hydraulic connectors and conductors
-
Repair hydraulic componentsAssessment Strategiesusing references used in the fieldrebuilding a componentreplacing a seal on a hydraulic componentreplacing a packing on a hydraulic componentreplacing a gasket on a hydraulic componentCriteriaapprentice installs the seal, gasket, or packing on a component that meets the checklist provided by the instructorapprentice differentiates between seals, packings, and gaskets without errorapprentice selects proper lubricant or no lubricant - as requiredhydraulic component does not leak, or leaks within tolerance after servicinghydraulic component functions according to specifications after servicing
-
Select hydraulic fluidsAssessment Strategiesselecting fluid for a specific hydraulic systemdifferentiating between several different types of fluidsprovided manufacturers technical references for various types of fluidsCriteriaapprentice selects the correct fluid every timeapprentice determines that the fluid is freshapprentice identifies contaminated fluid every timeapprentice uses procedures to avoid contamination
-
Perform preventive maintenance on hydraulic systemsAssessment Strategiesusing references used in the fieldcompleting a typical Preventative Maintenance (PM) task for a common hydraulic system componentCriteriaapprentice lists the steps to be performed for general maintenance of each hydraulic system componentapprentice lists the steps to be performed for general maintenance of the hydraulic system as a wholeapprentice specifies how to deal with the lock out tag out and system interlocks, etc.apprentice completes inspection, servicing, testing and reconditioning tasksapprentice identifies the frequency of the tasks ie., (daily, every other day, weekly, monthly, yearly, etc.)apprentice follows the manufacturer's recommended maintenance requirements
