Course Information
Description
This course develops apprentice skills regarding metallurgical concepts.  Apprentices will compare various metals and their applications, apply metallurgical techniques to work processes, test metals for hardness, and examine heat treating applications.  This course is the former C-7 module for the MMMP apprenticeship program.

  1. Examine different types of metal and their properties
    Assessment Strategies
    by explaining the properties of a metal in a given object
    Criteria
    apprentice explanation includes differences between ferrous and non-ferrous metals
    apprentice explanation references specific properties of the given metal
    apprentice is able to reference technical manuals to locate specific metal nomenclature

  2. Examine different metallurgical techniques and their applications
    Assessment Strategies
    by selecting a heat treating method,
    given a specific application and metal
    Criteria
    apprentice explains the characteristics of tempered, hardened, annealed steels, etc.
    apprentice adequately describes different hardening methods
    apprentice explains the impact of temperatures on different metals
    apprentice correctly describes the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that is needed for heat treating and their uses

  3. Test metal hardness
    Assessment Strategies
    by conducting hardness tests
    given a Rockwell tester
    given a Brinell tester
    Criteria
    apprentice can locate and use the technical specifications for a given tester
    apprentice correctly describes the PPE that is needed when conducting a hardness test
    apprentice can conduct a Rockwell hardness test to within manufacturer's specifications
    apprentice can conduct a Brinell hardness test to within manufacturer's specifications
    apprentice can conduct a file hardness test

  4. Apply different types of heat-treating techniques
    Assessment Strategies
    by heat-treating a tool
    Criteria
    apprentice selects the appropriate hardening method for a given tool
    apprentice correctly describes the PPE that is needed when heat-treating
    apprentice hardens a metal following the technical specifications for the process selected
    apprentice explains the difference between various hardening processes
    the tool achieves a specific hardness within the technical tolerance for the metal and the application
