Course Information
Description
Course compares common welding processes and develops apprentice skills related to welding, cutting, heating and using oxy-gas.  Welding with arc, MIG and TIG is included, along with common cutting and joining techniques.  This course was the former C-6 module for the MMMP apprenticeship program.

  1. Examine different welding processes
    Assessment Strategies
    by defining different methods of welding
    by describing various welding tools and when and how to use them
    Criteria
    apprentice can define different welding processes and terms
    apprentice can explain the importance of safety procedures in handling gases, and electrical current
    apprentice can explain the importance of safety procedures involved in various welding, cutting, joining processes
    apprentice can identify basic welding symbols and the type of joint
    apprentice explains requirements for "hot work permits"

  2. Weld, cut, and heat, using oxy-gas processes
    Assessment Strategies
    by welding, cutting, and heating in an actual or simulated setting
    Criteria
    apprentice complies with all safety procedures, hot work permit procedures, and PPE use requirements
    apprentice selects correct tips from technical references
    apprentice can correctly fit-up a joint for a given application(s)
    apprentice selects proper gas pressures
    apprentice lights torch following correct procedure
    apprentice describes where and how welding principles apply for different welding applications

  3. Arc weld metal
    Assessment Strategies
    by arc welding in an actual or simulated setting
    Criteria
    apprentice complies with all safety procedures, hot work permit procedures, and PPE use requirements
    apprentice selects correct rod from technical references
    apprentice can correctly fit-up a joint for a given application(s)
    apprentice selects correct amperage range
    apprentice sets up welder following correct procedure
    apprentice describes where and how welding principles apply for different welding applications

  4. Mig weld metal
    Assessment Strategies
    by mig welding in an actual or simulated setting
    Criteria
    apprentice complies with all safety procedures, hot work permit procedures, and PPE use requirements
    apprentice selects correct wire and gas from technical references
    apprentice selects correct amperage range and wire speed for a specific application
    apprentice can correctly fit-up a joint for a given application(s)
    apprentice sets up welder following correct procedure
    apprentice describes where and how welding principles apply for different welding applications

  5. Tig weld metal
    Assessment Strategies
    by tig welding in an actual or simulated setting

  6. Perform other types of cutting processes
    Assessment Strategies
    by performing other cutting processes in an actual or simulated setting
    by describing the other types of cutting processes
    Criteria
    apprentice complies with all safety procedures, hot work permit procedures, and PPE use requirements
    apprentice selects correct cutting process for a specific application
    apprentice can correctly clamp a joint for a cutting operation
    apprentice sets up cutting equipment following correct procedure
    apprentice describes where and how cutting principles apply for different cutting applications

  7. Perform other types of joining processes
    Assessment Strategies
    by performing other joining processes in an actual or simulated setting such as soldering , brazing, etc.
    by describing the other types of joining processes
    Criteria
    apprentice complies with all safety procedures, hot work permit procedures, and PPE use requirements
    apprentice selects correct brazing rod, solder compound, solder flux as appropriate from technical references
    apprentice selects and uses heat sinks where necessary
    apprentice can correctly fit-up a joint for a given joining process
    apprentice sets up brazing or soldering equipment following correct procedure
