Course Information
Description
Apprentices will compare types of rigging equipment and their uses; determine safe loads, rig and crib loads, and move a load with cranes and hoists in this course.  This course was formerly the C-5 module for related instruction in the MMMP apprenticeship.

Course Competencies
  1. Identify the types of rigging equipment and their uses
    Assessment Strategies
    by selecting rigging equipment as directed by instructor
    Criteria
    apprentice identifies the needed equipment for a variety of rigging applications
    apprentice selects the correct equipment for the rig
    apprentice identifies defective rigging equipment
    apprentice checks rigging equipment for load limits

  2. Determine the safe working load of rigging equipment
    Assessment Strategies
    by selecting rigging equipment for moving a load
    Criteria
    apprentice can calculate the weight of a load
    apprentice properly assess load for rigging requirements
    apprentice can determine if load is within range of a specific lifting apparatus
    apprentice matches the apparatus for the load being moved
    apprentice when in doubt errs on side of safety

  3. Rig a load
    Assessment Strategies
    by rigging a load as directed by instructor
    Criteria
    apprentice has selected the proper rigging equipment
    apprentice inspects rigging equipment for damage before lifting
    apprentice assesses the rig and load for safety before lifting
    apprentice identifies potential lift hazards
    rigging equipment is properly attached to load
    load is protected from potential hazards

  4. Crib a load
    Assessment Strategies
    by designing a crib
    Criteria
    apprentice describes the correct method for the materials being used to build the crib
    apprentice calculates the correct height and area to make a successful crib
    apprentice identifies the weight of the item to be cribbed within allowable tolerance

  5. Move a load with an overhead crane
    Assessment Strategies
    by moving a load with an overhead crane as directed by instructor
    Criteria
    apprentice completes the pre operational hoist inspection and operations check
    apprentice complies with all safety rules
    apprentice inspects rigging gear
    apprentice rigs load in accordance with the riggers handbook
    apprentice verifies the sling, hook, and crane capacity
    apprentice does not exceed recommended sling angle
    apprentice uses and observes all hand signals
    apprentice plans route for object being hoisted
    apprentice operates the controls smoothly and correctly
    apprentice maintains clearance from objects, equipment and people
    apprentice completes the post operational checks

  6. Move a load with a mobile crane
    Assessment Strategies
    by moving a load with a mobile crane as directed by instructor
    Criteria
    apprentice completes the pre operational mobile crane inspection and operations check
    apprentice complies with all safety rules
    apprentice inspects rigging gear
    apprentice verifies the sling, hook, and crane capacity
    apprentice does not exceed recommended sling angle or boom angle
    apprentice uses and observes all hand signals
    apprentice plans route for object being moved with the mobile crane
    apprentice operates the controls smoothly and correctly
    apprentice maintains clearance from objects, equipment and people
    apprentice completes the post operational checks

  7. Move a load with a portable hand hoisting/chain fall equipment
    Assessment Strategies
    by moving a load with portable hand hoisting/chain fall equipment as directed by instructor
    Criteria
    apprentice completes the pre operational hand hoist/chain fall equipment inspection and operations check
    apprentice complies with all safety rules
    apprentice inspects rigging equipment
    apprentice verifies the sling, hook, and hoist capacity
    apprentice does not exceed recommended sling angle or boom angle
    apprentice uses and observes all hand signals
    apprentice plans route for object being moved with the hand hoist/chain fall equipment
    apprentice operates the controls smoothly and correctly
    apprentice maintains clearance from objects, equipment, and people
    apprentice completes the post-operational checks
