Course Competencies
  1. Define the principles of pneumatics
    Assessment Strategies
showing where and how principles are being applied on actual or simulated pneumatic systems
by creating a table that defines the terms that make up the language of pneumatics
    Criteria
apprentice can cite a principle of pneumatics for an instructor directed situation in a pneumatic system
the table includes a column listing common pneumatic terms
the table includes a column showing definitions for each pneumatic term

  2. Interpret pneumatic schematic diagrams
    Assessment Strategies
by creating a sketch with circuit parameters provided by the instructor
    Criteria
    apprentice correctly recognizes pneumatic symbols
apprentice recognizes the difference between hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical symbols
apprentice interpretation includes identification of the component function
the sketch has the correct symbol depicting the correct component
the sketch depicts a "workable" pneumatic circuit
the sketch shows electrical inputs and controls to pneumatic components

  3. Analyze the function of pneumatic system components
    Assessment Strategies
examining a variety of components provided by the instructor
    Criteria
apprentice differentiates between various pneumatic components
apprentice explains the function of common pneumatic components
apprentice identifies typical applications of common pneumatic components
apprentice can locate and explain electrical inputs to a pneumatic control as applicable

  4. Explain the functions of common pneumatic valves
    Assessment Strategies
by creating a written explanation of the function of each valve presented by the instructor
    Criteria
apprentice written explanation of the function of each type of valve is correct
apprentice written explanation identifies typical applications for each valve type
apprentice written explanation describes location of electrical inputs to a pneumatic valve as applicable
apprentice written explaination describes the operation of electrical inputs to a pneumatic valve as applicable

  5. Apply troubleshooting principles to pneumatic systems
    Assessment Strategies
by documenting specific faults and their fixes for a pneumatic component in a system schematic
    Criteria
apprentice can locate, or describe exactly how to locate, manufacturer's troubleshooting references for pneumatic components
apprentice gives a clear explanation of what a selected pneumatic component does and how it operates
apprentice identifies exactly what is, or what would happen for a specific component malfunction
apprentice lists possible causes for a fault and isolates or shows how they would isolate a fault of a component
apprentice explains the methods and where to measure electrical inputs to a pneumatic system
apprentice matches problems with remedies for inoperative systems
apprentice explains repair test procedure for the electrical parts of the component as applicable
apprentice provides an accurate description of repair procedure including references and tools required to repair or replace the component
