Course Information
Description
This course will lead you through the fundamentals of electric motor control. You will learn to recognize and draw the basic symbols, the language of motor control, and how to apply these symbols, into current industrial format. You will also learn to draw and read ladder and wiring diagrams. You will be introduced to the logic used in motor control and be required to apply this logic in order to correctly interpret, design, and wire control circuits.

  1. Apply safety procedures, tools, and instrument to specific situations
    Assessment Strategies
    in an industrial setting simulated in the classroom or laboratory
    Criteria
    apprentice follows all safety procedures
    apprentice simulates all necessary lockout and tag out procedures
    apprentice dons all necessary personal protective equipment in the correct order and manner
    apprentice positions themself correctly (as applicable)
    apprentice selects the correct tools and equipment (as appropriate for the simulation)
    apprentice selects the correct instruments and materials (as appropriate for the simulation)
    apprentice performs all critical steps with the tool and or instrument in the right order
    apprentice accurately explains the simulated process as they perform it

  2. Complete the decision/action portion of a line drawing
    Assessment Strategies
    by completing the decision/action portion of a line drawing
    Criteria
    apprentice correctly recognizes contactor, solenoid, and starter symbols
    apprentice can explain the construction features and capabilities of contactors, solenoids, and starters
    apprentice can explain how to repair or replace renewal parts such as coils, contacts etc.
    apprentice describes limitations and common problems pertaining to renewal parts such as coils, contacts etc.
    the completed line drawing has the correct symbols used
    the completed line drawing accurately shows electrical actions/outputs
    the completed line drawing is neat and professional
