Course Competencies
  1. Define the principles of transformer theory
    Assessment Strategies
by making an electronic presentation that presents the theory of transformer operation
(actual class presentation is optional but creating the presentation is mandatory)
    Criteria
    SLIDE SHOW
presentation includes a variety of text, graphics, clip art, with sounds optional
presentation has a professional look with an overall graphic theme
presentation fonts and transitions are consistent from slide to slide
    CONTENT
presentation includes a minimum of 12 slides
presentation includes a clear introduction to transformer function
presentation slides present transformer theory in a logical flow
    presentation slides define mutual inductance
presentation slides clearly present voltage, current, and impedance transformation concepts
presentation clearly relates the definition of ratings and losses
presentation shows various types of transformers and gives examples of their applications

  2. Analyze the operation of single-phase transformers
    Assessment Strategies
by making an electronic presentation that presents the operation of a single-phase transformer
    CONTENT
presentation includes a minimum of 12 slides
presentation includes a clear introduction to single-phase transformer operation
presentation slides show single-phase transformer parts
    presentation slides show transformer formulas
presentation clearly relates the definition of ratings and losses in single-phase transformer operation
presentation shows common applications for single-phase transformers

  3. Analyze the operation of three-phase transformers
    Assessment Strategies
by creating a drawing with written explanations analyzing three-phase transformer operation
    Criteria
drawing labels the parts of a three-phase transformer
drawing shows a blowup of the data plate and has all information clearly presented
    drawing is neat and professional
written explanation describes the applications for each part of a three-phase transformer
written explanation details the purpose of each piece of data on the data plate
written explanation describes operation of the three-phase transformer
written explanation describes how voltage and current puts could be or would be changed

  4. Create a remedy table for some of the most common single and three phase transformer problems
    Assessment Strategies
    by creating a problem/cause/solution table
    Criteria
the table shows at least three of the most common transformer problems for single-phase transformers
the table shows at least three of the most common transformer problems for three-phase transformers
the table lists common causes for each problem
the table shows common causes in "general" order of likelihood with the most likely being #1
the table shows possible solutions for each cause shown
the table shows suggested solutions in relative order of ease to perform with the easiest being #1
