Description
This course will introduce the learner to mathematical formulas and equations that are essential and specific to the masonry trade. This course provides the learner with practical mathematical and technical aspects necessary to meet and accept the responsibility of being a mason.

Course Competencies
  1. Perform arithmetic operations on whole numbers.
    Assessment Strategies
    solving a variety of arithmetic problems on whole numbers with or without a calculator.
    Criteria
    apprentice selects mathematical operation that matches the given situation (i.e., word problems and/or dimensioned drawings)
    you have completed all processes involving whole numbers with an accuracy of 80%

  2. Perform arithmetic operations on fractions.
    Assessment Strategies
    solving various mathematical problems involving different operations on fractions with or without a calculator.
    Criteria
    apprentice selects mathematical operation that matches the given situation (i.e., word problems and/or dimensioned drawings)
    apprentice has performed all processes involving fractions with 80% accuracy.

  3. Perform arithmetic operations on decimal fractions.
    Assessment Strategies
    solving various mathematic problems involving decimal fractions with or without a calculator.
    Criteria
    apprentice selects mathematical operation that matches the given situation (i.e., word problems and/or dimensioned drawings)
    apprentice has converted all decimals with 80% accuracy

  4. Solve percentage, ratio and proportion problems.
    Assessment Strategies
    solving a variety of mathematic problems involving percentages, ratios, and proportions with or without calculator.
    Criteria
    apprentice selects mathematical operation that matches the given situation (i.e., word problems and/or dimensioned drawings)
    apprentice correctly sets up a ratio equation
    apprentice correctly sets up a proportion equation
    apprentice calculates percents to 80% accuracy
    apprentice calculates proportions to 80% accuracy

  5. Perform basic geometric operations
    Assessment Strategies
    solving various mathematic problems involving geometric operations with or without calculator.
    Criteria
    apprentice selects the geometric operation that matches the given situation(ie, word problems and or dimensioned drawings) 80% accuracy required on all work
    the layout is completed with geometric principle(s) selected to solve specific layout problems

  6. Determine powers and roots.
    Assessment Strategies
    solving a variety of mathematic problems involving powers and roots with or without a calculator.
    Criteria
    apprentice correctly determines the use of powers and or roots as needed for the problem
    apprentice explains the use of powers or roots to solve area problems
    apprentice calculates area to 80% accuracy
    apprentice calculates powers with 80% accuracy
    apprentice calculates roots with 80% accuracy
