Course Information
Description
Introduces the basic concepts and skills using engine lathes, power saws, drill presses and bench applications. Emphasizes safety and proper operation of tools and machines, speeds, feeds, cutting tools, tool geometry, tool grinding and work-holding devices. Stresses dimensional accuracy, finish and quality as well as team-building and work ethics.

  2. Perform hand and bench work.
    Assessment Strategies
    Demonstrate the appropriate use of  tools in the machine tool lab.
    Use the appropriate tools for specific lab projects.

    Criteria
    Deburr parts.
    Use appropriate hand tools.

  3. Perform basic layout measurement and inspection.

    Lay out profiles of a line that is non-arc based.
    Lay out the location of hole centers and surfaces.
    Lay out points of tangency between arcs and lines.

  4. Use pedestal grinder.
    Assessment Strategies
    Use pedestal grinder to grind, twist, drill to blueprint specifications.
    Grind H.S.S lathe tools to blue print specifications.
    Achieve passing grade on pedestal grinder test.
    Criteria
    Demonstrate pedestal grinder safety
    Change grinding wheel
    Dress and true grinding wheel
    Truing wheel to produce required micro finish
    Grind freehand
    Ground to within print tolerances
    Hand grind twist drills
    Grind lathe tool to appropriate angle.

  5. Operate vertical band saw and horizontal cutoff saw.

    Saw to required tolerances.
    Achieve a passing grade on cutoff machine test.
    Criteria
    Select the correct speed and feed for material and saw blade.
    Bandsaw a piece part.
    Demonstrate cutoff machine safety procedures.
