Course Information
Description
This is the first course of 3 courses for industrial electrician apprentices to explore motor controls. This course introduces concepts, terminology, and safety. In addtion, this is designed to give the Industrial Electrician Apprentice the knowledge required by industry to maintain electric motors and generators.  This course material will cover DC motors and generators, single-phase and three-phase motors, as well as alternators.

Course Competencies
  1. Define the principles of DC generators
    Assessment Strategies
    showing where and how principles are being applied on an actual or simulated generator system
    by creating a table that defines the terms that make up the language of generators
    given estimated time of 6 hours
    Criteria
    apprentice can cite a principle of generators for an instructor directed situation in a generator system
    the table includes a column listing common generator terms
    the table includes a column showing definitions for each generator term

  2. Define the principles of DC motors
    Assessment Strategies
    showing where and how principles are being applied on an actual or simulated motor system
    by creating a table that defines the terms that make up the language of motors
    given estimated time of 8 hours
    Criteria
    apprentice can cite principles of motors for an instructor directed situation in a motor system

  3. Analyze the operation of alternators
    Assessment Strategies
    by creating a sketch of an alternator and its wiring circuit
    given estimated time of 5 hours
    Criteria
    apprentice correctly recognizes alternator symbols and wiring circuits
    apprentice recognizes the difference between alternator types
    apprentice interpretation includes identification of each alternator component function
    the sketch has the correct symbol depicting the correct component
    the sketch depicts a "workable" alternator circuit
    the sketch shows electrical inputs and controls

  4. Analyze the operation of three-phase motors
    Assessment Strategies
    by creating a sketch of an three-phase motor and its wiring circuit
    given estimated time of 8 hours
    Criteria
    apprentice correctly recognizes three-phase motor symbols and wiring circuits
    apprentice recognizes the difference between three-phase motor types
    apprentice interpretation includes identification of each three-phase motor component function
    the sketch has the correct symbol depicting the correct component
    the sketch depicts a "workable" three-phase motor circuit
    the sketch shows electrical inputs and controls
