Course Information
Description
The refinishing phase includes further instruction in the proper use of the spray gun, performing partial and complete refinishing repairs on vehicles. Procedures for blending and tinting of the paint to achieve an acceptable color match are practices. Shop and paint safety practices are emphasized. Instruction on the safe removal and installation of trim and hardware is covered along with specialty tools necessary to perform operations using industry accepted procedures.

    Criteria
    Select and use proper personal safety equipment; take necessary precautions with hazardous operations and materials in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
    Locate OEM procedures to identify material and composition of the vehicle being repaired (mild steel, high strength steel, ultra-high strength steel, aluminum, stationary glass, etc.)
    Locate procedures and precautions that may apply to the vehicle being repaired, including materials used in the repair.
    Perform vehicle clean-up; complete quality control using a checklist on operations performed.

  2. Follow safety precautions and regulations for painting and refinishing

    Criteria
    Select and use proper personal safety equipment for surface preparation, spray gun and related equipment operation, paint mixing, matching and application, paint defects, and detailing (glove, suits, hoods, eye and ear protection, etc.); take necessary precautions with hazardous operations and materials according to federal, state, and local regulations. HP-1
    Identify safety and personal health hazards according to OSHA guidelines and the “Right to Know Law”, and SDS information. HP-1
    Inspect spray environment and equipment to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations, and for safety and cleanliness hazards. HP-I
    Select and use a NIOSH approved respiratory protection system (supplied air/fresh air make up recommended). Perform proper maintenance in accordance with OSHA Regulation 1910.134 and applicable state and local regulations. HP-I

  3. Prepare vehicle surfaces for painting and refinishing

    Inspect, remove, store, protect, and replace exterior trim and components necessary for proper surface preparation. HP-I
    Soap and water wash entire vehicle; use appropriate cleaner to remove contaminants. HP-I
    Inspect and identify type of finish, surface condition, and film thickness; develop and document a plan for refinishing using a total product system. HP-I
    Identify location of area to be refinished relative to safety systems (ADAS); determine refinish procedure according to manufacturer guidelines. HP-G
    Remove, with a tack rag, any dust or lint particles from the area to be refinished. HP-I
    Apply suitable primer sealer to the area being refinished. HP-I

    Inspect, clean, and determine condition of spray guns and related equipment (air hoses, regulators, air lines, air source, spray environment, and fillers). HP-I
    Select spray gun setup (fluid needle, nozzle, and cap) for product being applied. HP-I
    Test and adjust spray gun using fluid, air and pattern control valves. HP-I

  5. Paint and refinish a vehicle
