Course Information
Description
Builds on principles and skills developed in Dental Radiography. Dental Assisting students produce full mouth series, extra-oral and specialized images on adult and child patients. Emphasis is placed on protection against radiation exposure risks. Students will also produce, mount, and evaluate images of diagnostic quality. In addition, they will use images to explain dental health and treatment plans to patients.

  1. Expose full mouth images on patients to include permanent, primary/mixed and/or edentulous dentitions
    Assessment Strategies
    on patients in a clinical or laboratory setting
    using both paralleling and bisecting angle techniques
    given the required forms
    under the supervision and observation of instructional or qualified clinical staff
    Criteria
    check the prescription before exposure
    select the correct armamentarium
    manage patients effectively
    position yourself and your patient correctly
    perform all steps in the correct order
    record exposure accurately
    employ safety precautions
    follow infection control protocol
    wear personal protective equipment

  2. Produce images of diagnostic quality
    Assessment Strategies
    in a laboratory/clinical setting using processing equipment
    by submitting processed and mounted images for evaluation
    by explaining a treatment plan or diagnosis to a patient or role play patient
    Criteria
    check that equipment is prepared and ready for use
    images meet standards of diagnostic quality
    processing errors are recorded and corrections are listed
    images are mounted correctly
    follow infection control protocol
    use images to explain diagnosis and treatment plans
    explanation is accurate
    use terminology and language that the patient understands, accurately defining technical terms as necessary
    check for patient understanding
    respond truthfully and accurately to patient questions
    images are stored and can be easily retrieved
    patient's records show accurate, up-to-date documentation of treatment and services

  3. Produce extraoral images
    Assessment Strategies
    under the supervision and observation of instructional staff
    on patients in a clinical or laboratory setting

  4. Produce images using specialized techniques
    Assessment Strategies
    by exposing specialized images on patients or manikins in a laboratory/clinic setting
    given the required forms
    under the supervision and observation of instructional or qualified clinical staff
    by submitting processed images
    Criteria
    expose bitewing and occlusal images on permanent and primary or mixed dentitions
    expose periapicals for endodontic treatment (optional)
    expose images using localization techniques
    check the prescription before exposure
    record exposure accurately
    select the correct armamentarium
    perform all critical in the correct order
    position yourself and your patient correctly
    employ safety precautions
    follow infection control protocol
    wear personal protective equipment
