Perform barbering services through an externship while working in a community-based licensed establishment under the supervision of a licensed barber.

  1. Implement safety and infection control practices

    Practice safety and sanitation procedures as identified in Wisconsin statutes and administrative codes
    Smock, apron, chemical, and cutting capes are washed effectively off-site
    Sterilize/disinfect tools and equipment
    Follow personal hygiene protocol to prevent infection spread
    Identify disorders of the hair, skin, scalp and nails that are outside of safety and infection control standards
    Work area is kept clean and neat
    Read and interpret materials and documents, if requested

    Criteria
    I. Hygiene, grooming, and personal development.
    II. Bacteriology, sterilization, and sanitation.

    IV. Haircutting, hair tapering (clipper-cuts), razor cutting, hairstyling, curling, thermal waving, finger-waving, roller setting, pincurl placement, blow-drying, shampoos, scalp and hair treatments, conditioning, reconditioning, hair analysis, and care of hairpieces, wigs, and wefts.
    V. Hair straightening, hair relaxing, thermal hair straightening, blow-outs, permanents, hair coloring, tinting, bleaching (lightening), and chemistry.
    VI. Shaving, beard and mustache shaping, trimming, men’s facial, facial massages, and basic principles of electricity.
    VII. Anatomy and physiology of the hair, skin, and disorders of the hair, skin, scalp.
    VIII. Product knowledge, product use and sales, preparing and consulting with customer for services.
    IX. Laws, rules, professional ethics, and history of barbering.
    X. Individual student needs, industry trends and electives, such as recordkeeping, mathematics, communications, human relations, public relations, and first aid.
