Course Information
Description
Introduces students to foundational hair styling methods using tools such as blow dryers, curling irons, and a variety of styling products. Wet hair styling techniques, including roller sets, pin curls, and finger waves. Emphasis is placed on proper parting and sectioning to ensure precision and consistency. Practice on mannequins and available models, building confidence and skill in classic and modern styling approaches.

  2. Part and clip hair effectively

    Comb is used effectively, as specified by the instructor
    Part is straight
    Hair strands stay on each parted section (without crossing over)
    Section width and placement match desired technique
    Part avoids scratching client's scalp
    Clips prevent stray hairs or sections from falling into the working section
    Clips are placed for sequential access

  3. Perform blow drying

    Criteria
    Hair tools, brush, and equipment are clean and available before start of service
    Assess the hair and scalp prior to blow-drying
    Drape the client prior to blow-drying
    Towel dry or blot the hair
    Remove hair tangles beginning at the scalp
    Apply styling and protection products prior to blow-drying
    Part and section the hair
    Maintain distance from the scalp with blow-dryer, as specified by the instructor
    Direct the airflow from the roots to the ends
    Blow-dry the hair at a medium temperature to prevent burning the scalp
    Direct the air of the blow-dryer away from the ears and skin
    Avoid irritating the scalp with the brush
    Apply finishing product

  4. Perform thermal (heat) styling

    Criteria
    Assess the hair and scalp prior to heating
    Differentiate types of thermal/heated tools used in a barber shop
    Verify the hair is dry before thermal pressing
    Thermal/hot comb is heated to level specified by the instructor
    Apply heat protectant
    Test the heat of the hot comb
    Insert the teeth of the hot comb at the base of the hair section
    Draw the hot comb down the length of the hair strand to the hair ends

  5. Perform wet hair styling techniques

    Criteria
    Assess the hair and scalp prior to styling
    Drape client for a wet hairstyling service
    Determine optimal level of hair dampness for the desired style
    Select effective type and hold level of styling product (gel, pomade, tonic) based on client's hair texture and desired look
    Perform techniques such as finger-waving, roller setting, pincurl placement
    Technique avoids excessive pulling and excessive product
    Final style holds its shape as it dries

  6. Examine strategies to generate retail sales in a barber shop

    Correlate the role of selling products to the barber's retail goals
    Justify the use of a product line within a barber shop
    Describe how retail products are integrated during a service
    Demonstrate active listening during client communication
