Course Information
Description
Examine the color wheel and theory behind the "Law of Color." Identify the chemicals used in hair coloring and color maintenance services; mix and apply temporary, semi-permanent, demi-permanent and permanent color. Practice lightening techniques, cap, foiling, and corrective color procedures.  Analyze the chemistry of lightening products. Illustrate effective client consultations and communication.

  2. Conduct a haircoloring pre-service consultation

    Mock performance includes procedures for establishing a new client
    Categorize client scalp and hair health
    Include results from hair texture, density, porosity, and elasticity analyses in your consultation
    Speak with the client about hair products used at home

    Determine the natural/existing tone
    Speak with the client to determine the desired level

  3. Formulate the haircolor

  4. Prepare for a haircoloring service

    Supplies are chosen and positioned for most efficient use during the haircoloring service
    Client is effectively draped for a chemical service
    Predisposition/patch test is verified
    Preliminary strand test is conducted before applying color to the entire head
    Determine the most effective type of application for the desired end result
    You follow manufacturer's directions
    Protective cream is applied around the hairline before starting, if applicable
    Hair is parted into four sections
    Color is effectively mixed
    Color is effectively applied immediately after mixing
    Preparation is completed within 15 minutes

  5. Apply non-oxidative haircolor products

    Criteria
    Analyze client's hair and scalp during consultation
    Supplies are chosen and positioned for most efficient use during the haircoloring service
    Equipment and tools are sanitized, disinfected
    Follow process to effectively prepare the client
    Non-oxidative haircolor is effectively mixed
    You follow manufacturer's directions for products used
    Apply the non-oxidative haircolor as specified by the instructor or scoring rubric
    All of the hair is covered with the non-oxidative haircolor
    You wipe drips and spills
    Trash is disposed of according to sanitation rules, such as in a covered receptacle
    Equipment and work areas is maintained effectively
    Application is completed within 10 minutes
    Non-oxidative haircolor procedures and products are documented in the client record

  6. Perform oxidative haircolor services

    Criteria
    Work area with client is prepared and cleaned/sanitized effectively before and after application
    Perform a client consultation/analysis prior to the service
    Use most effective products to mix based on consultation, analysis, and preliminary color strand test
    Hair is sectioned prior to haircolor application
    You follow manufacturer's directions for products used
    Haircoloring product is applied evenly
    You wipe drips and spills
    Trash is disposed of according to sanitation rules, such as in a covered receptacle
    Equipment and tools are sanitized, disinfected
    Product is mixed with 100% accuracy, according to the manufacturer's directions
    Product is mixed within 10 minutes
    Oxidative haircolor is applied within 20 minutes
