Course Information
Description
Identify principal tools and implements, apply haircutting terminology, recognize facial shapes and anatomical features, and examine techniques to create a variety of haircutting designs. Apply safety and sanitation procedures adhering to the Wisconsin Statutes and Administrative codes.

Course Competencies
  1. Explain barber safety and sanitation procedures from the Wisconsin Statutes and Administrative codes
    Assessment Strategies
    Test, verbal, and/or skill demonstration
    Criteria
    Examine disinfection standards (SPS 50.271)
    Examine sanitation standards (SPS 50.271)
    Examine procedures for exposure to blood (SPS 50.290)
    Examine hand washing techniques - Hands are washed thoroughly with soap and running water prior to serving each client and following removal of gloves (waterless hand washing agents that kill 99.99% of germs are an acceptable substitute)

  2. Examine the principles and design elements of haircutting
    Assessment Strategies
    Written product and/or oral response
    Criteria
    Identify characteristics of the four basic forms (different ways hair lengths are arranged around the head)
    Identify combinations of the basic forms (merge two or more of the four foundational forms)
    Correspond photos/images to the correct four forms and combination forms
    Identify lines, angles, elevations, and form lines

  3. Use haircutting tools safely and effectively
    Assessment Strategies
    Skill demonstration in lab
    Criteria
    Describe components of various types of tools used in haircutting
    Identify parts of shears, clippers, and razors
    Match tools to haircutting task
    Handle haircutting tools in a safe and sanitary manner
    Handle haircutting tools per manufacturer and/or instructor guidelines
    Demonstrate effective techniques for holding shears, comb, clippers, and razors
    Describe procedures for effective disinfection and decontamination of haircutting tools

  4. Apply foundational haircutting skills and terminology to achieve a client's desired look

    Skill demonstration in lab, quiz, scenario, and/or verbal response
    Criteria
    Map out sections of the head
    Use correct terms and language relating to haircutting
    Demonstrate form lines, guide lines, angles and elevations
    Recognize the three types of distribution
    Demonstrate sectioning and partings
    Explain texturizing techniques
    Explain distribution and blending

  5. Describe the four basic haircutting forms

    Criteria
    Relate the use of "haircutting forms" to a haircut's end result
    Identify hair growth patterns
    Identify techniques to correct facial structures
    Identify the components of the basic four forms
    Identify combinations of the basic four forms

  6. Recognize facial shapes that influence haircutting and styling decisions
    Assessment Strategies
    Test, verbal, and/or skill demonstration in lab
    Criteria
    Differentiate between round, oval, square, heart, and diamond face shapes
    Recommend haircut and style designs for each face shape
    Recommendation creates balance and complements a client's face shape

  7. Recognize anatomical features that influence haircutting and styling decisions
    Assessment Strategies
    Test, verbal, and/or skill demonstration in lab
    Criteria
    Describe the role of the occipital bone in determining fades, guiding clippers, and blending
    Describe the role of the Parietal ridge ("crest") as a reference for blending shorter sides into longer top hair
    Identify irregular skull shapes and corresponding barber techniques for creating a balanced appearance
    Recommend blending and detailing techniques for different head and skull shapes
    Recommendation creates balance and complements a client's head and skull

  8. Recognize hairline and growth patterns that influence haircutting and styling decisions
    Assessment Strategies
    Test, verbal, and/or skill demonstration in lab
    Criteria
    Locate the hairline
    Describe the shape of the hairline
    Identify cowlicks and widow's peaks
    Describe hair texture, such as coarse, fine, tightly coiled
    Recommend blending and detailing techniques for different hairlines
    Recommendation creates balance and complements a client's hairline and growth patterns
    Defend the importance of detailing around the hairline, beard, and mustache

  9. Recognize facial features that influence shaping and shaving decisions
    Assessment Strategies

    Criteria
    Define proportion
    Identify a variety of nose, jawline, and lip features
    Describe the mannequin's beard shape
    Describe the mannequin's mustache shape
    Recommend beard and mustache shapes that bring overall facial proportions and features into balance
