Students study long hair styling techniques for clients, including styles for competition.

Course Competencies
  1. 1.    Consult with client for a hairstyle
    Assessment Strategies
    in a consultation with a client
    prior to the hairstyling service
    by documenting consultation information
    Criteria
    consultation includes discussing client expectations and the limitations of the client's hair
    consultation includes discussing client lifestyle and resulting maintenance for hairstyle
    consultation includes reviewing client hair history and previous hairstyles
    consultation includes recommendations for home hair care methods and products
    consultation includes disclosing cost of services
    you inform client he/she cannot treat diseased skin unless under the direction of a physician (if appropriate)
    you obtain consent of the client of the legal guardian of the client prior to a hairstyling service
    client signs a release form
    you make a reasonable effort to safely comply with the client's requests
    you complete the consultation within 10 minutes

  2. 2.    Design long hairstyles
    Assessment Strategies
    by creating long hair styles on live models (or mannequins)
    Criteria
    hairstyles are based on hair and scalp analysis
    hairstyles are based on client consultation
    hairstyles include elements of form, space, line
    hairstyles include single, repeating, contrasting design lines
    hairstyles utilize the color/highlights of the hair
    hairstyles accommodate the texture of the hair
    hairstyles are proportional and balanced to body shapes/sizes
    hairstyles provide balance to facial shapes
    you follow safety and decontamination rules

  3. 3.    Wrap the hair to create hairstyles
    Assessment Strategies
    by wrapping hair to create a specific hairstyle
    for a client (or mannequin) and client-related hair conditions
    using tools, equipment, and products available for the service
    by documenting the styling information
    Criteria
    wrap includes a hair and scalp analysis
    wrap includes a client consultation prior to the service
    wrap includes selecting decontaminated tools and equipment for a specific effect
    wrap includes preparing the client and work area
    wrapping techniques include using 1 or 2 rollers at the crown for elevation
    wrapping techniques include a smooth, unbroken flow of shaped hair
    wrapping techniques include securing the wrap with tissue
    you clean and disinfect tools, equipment, and work area
    you dispose of trash in appropriate, covered recepticals you complete wrapping within 10 minutes
