Course Information
Description
Fabrication 1 students will be introduced to the fundamentals of metal cutting and forming. Students will create assemblies from industrial drawings conforming to industry standards. Emphasis will be placed on the safety, basic layout techniques, bending calculations, and operational of manual and mechanical cutting/forming equipment.

  1. Demonstrate proper inspection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)

    You achieve a 100% on a written general shop safety test
    You are observed using the proper PPE correctly in the fabrication lab

  2. Perform layout operations for fabrication assemblies
    Assessment Strategies
    Lab performance evaluation
    Criteria
    You safely operate manual layout tools
    Layout conforms to the tolerances specified on the drawing

  3. Perform cutting operations for fabrication assemblies
    Assessment Strategies
    Written test, lab performance evaluation
    Criteria
    You receive a minimum of 70 on a written evaluation of the operation of the Shear, Horizontal Band Saw, Drill Press, and Iron Worker
    You safely operate cutting equipment
    You set up cutting machinery per specification

  4. Perform forming operations for fabrication assemblies
    Assessment Strategies
    Written test, lab performance evaluation
    Criteria
    You receive a minimum of 70 on a written evaluation of the operation of the Box/Pan Brake and Hossfeld Bender
    You safely operate manual forming equipment
    Forming meets quality standards per tolerances specified on the drawing
    Lengths for the web, flanges, and angles meet quality standards per tolerances specified on the drawing
    Forming is free of sharp edges
    Forming is free of dust, oil, or dirt

  5. Perform joining operations for fabrication assemblies
    Assessment Strategies

    Criteria
    You safely operate joining equipment
    Holes conform to quality standards
    Screws or bolts are placed and fitted per drawing
    Joining meets quality standards per tolerances specified on the drawing
    Joining is free of sharp edges
    Joining is free of dust, oil, or dirt
