Course Information
Description
Introductory course designed to provide the learner with a basic theoretical understanding of the Gas Metal Arc Welding process. Emphasis is placed on welding safety, equipment set-up/adjustment and developing manipulative skills using the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding Process. Welding skills are developed by performing a variety of weld joints in the flat and horizontal position on mild steel and stainless steel. Welding electrode identification, applications and shielding gasses are also addressed.

    Assessment Strategies
    through instructor observation
    by completing a written evaluation with a minimum score of 70%

    you demonstrate safety procedures
    you protect tools, equipment and manuals
    you maintain clean and organized work areas
    you demonstrate conservative use of shop supplies
    you work in a well-ventilated area with no potential for a build-up of gases
    you point the welding torch only in the direction of the intended weld
    you explore potential eye damage from ultraviolet and infrared radiation
    you use minimum filter plate shade to prevent eye damage
    you wear protective clothing to prevent skin damage from ultraviolet and infrared radiation
    you investigate the prevention of respiratory damage from dangerous fumes and gases
    you explore the steps a welder takes to minimize the potential for electric shock

  2. Set-up the GTAW power source
    Assessment Strategies
    by setting up the GTAW power source per instructor's specifications
    Criteria
    you set power source for constant amperage output
    you adjust amperage setting for chosen electrode diameter and metal type and thickness
    you set output contactor selector switch to "remote" operation
    you set the amperage adjustment switch to "remote" operation
    you set high frequency control to "start only"
    you open shielding gas supply and adjust flowmeter for desired flow rate
