Course Information
Description
Introductory course designed to provide the learner with a basic theoretical understanding of the Gas Metal Arc Welding process. Emphasis is placed on welding safety, equipment set-up/adjustment and developing manipulative skills using the Gas Metal Arc Welding Process. Welding skills are developed by performing a variety of weld joints in the flat and horizontal position on mild steel. Welding electrode identification, applications and shielding gasses are also addressed.

    you maintain clean and organized work areas
    you demonstrate conservative use of shop supplies
    you work in a well-ventilated area with no potential for a build-up of gases
    you point the weld gun only in the direction of the intended weld
    you explore potential eye damage from ultraviolet and infrared radiation
    you examine minimum filter plate shade to prevent eye damage
    you examine protective clothing to prevent skin damage from ultraviolet and infrared radiation
    you investigate the prevention of respiratory damage from dangerous fumes and gases
    you explore the steps a welder takes to minimize the potential for electric shock

  2. Set-up the GMAW power source
    Assessment Strategies
    by setting up the GMAW power source per instructor's specifications
    Criteria
    you set power source for constant voltage output
    you adjust voltage setting for chosen electrode diameter and mode of metal transfer
    you adjust wire feed speed for chosen electrode diameter and desire amperage input
    you open shielding gas supply and adjust flowmeter for desired flow rate

  3. Create flat position stringer beads using a forehand welding method
