Course Information
Description
Oxy Fuel Cutting 1 students will be introduced to the fundamentals of manual and semi-automatic Oxygen Fuel Gas Cutting and Plasma Cutting processes. Students will assemble, operate, and maintain equipment used to perform these operations. Emphasis will be placed on the safe operational procedures and the techniques required to cut metal to industry standards.

  1. Demonstrate safety and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
    Assessment Strategies
    Written test, lab performance evaluation
    Criteria
    You achieve a 100% on a written general shop safety test
    You inspect PPE for damage or wear
    You wear safety glasses
    You wear welding gloves
    You wear work shoes, such as steel toe boots
    You wear flame retardant clothing that is not frayed or torn
    You follow safety guidelines

  2. Assemble cutting machinery per specification
    Assessment Strategies
    Written test, lab performance evaluation
    Criteria
    You receive a minimum of 70 on the test related to Oxy Fuel Gas and Plasma Cutting
    You assemble Oxy/Fuel Gas and Plasma Cutting equipment following the procedures specified in the manufacturer’s operation manual
    You use PPE during assembly of the cutting equipment
    You follow safety guidelines

  3. Operate cutting machinery per specification
    Assessment Strategies
    Written test, lab performance evaluation
    Criteria
    You receive a minimum of 70 on the test related to Oxy Fuel Gas and Plasma Cutting
    You performing cutting operations within tolerances specified on the drawings
    You cut with Oxy/Fuel Gas and Plasma Cutting equipment
    Cut is free or almost free of dross and with a minimal amount of burn serrations
    You use PPE during operation of the cutting machinery
    You follow safety guidelines

  4. Maintain cutting machinery per specification
    Assessment Strategies
    Written test, lab performance evaluation
    Criteria
    You receive a minimum of 70 on the test related to Oxy Fuel Gas and Plasma Cutting
    You verify machinery is in proper working order
    You verify cutting tips are clean and free of damage
    You verify torch valves close completely without gas leaks and have seals that are present and free of cracks
    You verify regulators are clean, undamaged, and adjustable throughout their working range
    You verify hoses are free of cuts and cracks with fittings that are tight and don’t leak
    You use PPE during operation of the cutting machinery
    You follow safety guidelines
