Course Information
Description
This course provides learners with strategies to develop skills necessary to make satisfying career development decisions. Learners will have an opportunity to participate in self-awareness activities and standardized assessments that focus on the areas of personality, interests, skills, and values. In addition, this course will explore researching career paths, market research, planning, goal setting and decision making. Students will leave with a better understanding of themselves, career paths, and our current job market.

  1. Explore personal characteristics as they relate to career development
    Assessment Strategies
    You will demonstrate your competence by completing a personality Inventory by a specified date.
    You will demonstrate your competence by completing a group discussion assignment by analyzing your results of the personality Inventory.
    Criteria
    you answer all questions on of the personality Inventory instrument.
    you describe your personality characteristics.
    you discuss how those characteristics relate to career options.
    you assist group recorder in completing the written assignment.
    you participate verbally in the group discussion.

  2. Explore personal interests as they relate to career development
    Assessment Strategies
    You will demonstrate your competency by completing an interest inventory by a specified date.
    You will demonstrate your competency by completing a group discussion assignment by analyzing the results of the inventory.
    Criteria
    you complete all answers on the inventory.
    you define the difference between vocational or avocational interests.
    you prioritize your interests.
    you discuss how your interests relate to career options.
    you participate verbally in the group discussion.

  3. Explore skills related to career development
    Assessment Strategies
    You will demonstrate your competency by completing a skills assessment by a specified date.
    You will demonstrate your competency by completing a group discussion assignment by analyzing the results of the skills assessment.

  4. Explore values related to career development
    Assessment Strategies
    You will demonstrate your competency by completing a values activity.
    You will demonstrate your competency by completing a group discussion assignment by analyzing the results of the values activity.

    you describe how your value system is unique.
    you discuss how your values relate to career options.
    you participate verbally in a group discussion.

  5. Use occupational research skills as they relate to career development
    Assessment Strategies
    You will demonstrate your competency by participating in a tour of Academic Career Resources and /or library.
    You will demonstrate your competency by completing an occupational research assignment.
    Criteria
    you use online career resources.
    you choose one to three occupations to research.
    you define at a minimum this information about your occupation(s): definition of the occupation, earnings, working conditions, market research, education, necessary qualifications and skills and related occupations.
    you document your resources.

  6. Plan career path
    Assessment Strategies
    You will demonstrate your competency by completing a summation project.
    You will demonstrate your competency by presenting a summation project in written and verbal format.
    Criteria
    you include your results of all inventories, assessments, and activities.
    you include occupational research assignments.
    you choose potential career options.
    you describe how your assessment results relate to your potential career options.
    you describe your decision making process.
    you outline your career goals at this time.
    you outline the specific steps to take in order to achieve your goals.
